Since it is difficult to dry a large cellar with improvised means, special dehumidifiers are used to effectively get rid of moisture. Water vapor in this case can come both from the ground, through the pores in the basement walls, and from above, from the house, through cracks in the cellar door or holes in the ceiling.

And here the solution to the problem depends on the purpose of the basement. The cellar for food is insulated from above, along the ceiling and the door, and the cellar for personal needs from below, along the walls and floor.

The reason is simple - in the cellar for storing food, a stable low temperature is needed, so the room must be protected from the influx of heat from above. As a result, the difference in air temperatures and basement structures is destroyed, which allows removing moisture from the cellars.

The place where the door jamb connects to the floor must be cleaned of chips and debris, and then filled with mounting foam. The thermal insulation of the ceiling for concrete and wooden basement floors is carried out in various ways. In the case of a concrete floor, the following work must be done:

Waterproofing work in the construction of a garage

In the construction of a basement under a garage, it is best to use concrete slabs or poured concrete masses, both for walls and for floors. Do not use materials that have a porous structure - foam blocks, bricks and expanded clay.

When choosing between tape arrangement and monolithic construction, one must proceed from financial possibilities and construction time.

The monolithic method is more expensive and more complicated, but much stronger and more durable. To avoid groundwater in the pit, all work should be started in the summer, in dry weather. The gaps between the foundation pit and the basement walls are filled with a 20 cm layer of clay.

If groundwater passes above the floor in the basement, waterproofing with roofing material in several layers under the base of the floors is necessary. In this case, a pillow is made of clay or bituminous rubble.

Of modern waterproof materials, it is recommended to use a PVC membrane with a layer of at least 1.5 mm. During the construction of reinforced concrete, it is embroidered with a solution with waterproofing impurities.

Drainage of the basement in the garage

Before laying waterproofing in the basement, it must be drained. This is done in the warm season in the absence of precipitation. The room is freed from all items in it. The floor is cleaned of debris and the basement in the garage (cellar) is ventilated for three days. Then the drying of the room begins.

Using a brazier for drying is one of the simplest methods that does not require special skills and equipment.

Any unnecessary bucket is placed in the center of the room, a fire is made in the container and maintained for several hours to eliminate excess moisture. To make the fire more stable, holes are made in the bottom and placed on a heat-resistant tray so that there is traction from below.

When burning, the air in the basement heats up and provides enhanced air exchange, and the smoke rids the surface of fungus and mold, as well as rodents and insects.

The candle method is not much more complicated, but just as effective. For this, a pipe is brought out from the floor itself. The candle is fixed in a container and placed at the end of the pipe, paper is set on fire for initial draft, and then the candle will provide natural draft.

This design should dry the basement for three days, until the cellar is completely dry. Instead of a candle, a tablet of any dry combustible substance with a similar effect is sometimes used.


External drainage

Effective in the fight against dampness and drainage, which removes moisture outside the garage or into the sewer. But such an arrangement is possible only with a separate garage. It is better to provide for such a system during construction, but if this has not been done, it can also be done in an operated garage.

  • On the basement floor, markings are applied around the entire perimeter and a trench is dug 40-50 cm wide and of the same depth;
  • Wells are made to the first sandy layer every 2 meters. PVC pipes are inserted into the wells and covered with gratings with a fine-grained mesh so that crumbling soil does not fall into them;
  • At the bottom of the ditch, going onto its walls, a layer of geotextile is laid out and covered with gravel or crushed stone just above the bottom point of the basement wall. Well rammed;
  • The edges of the canvas are wrapped on gravel, which resembles a kind of drainage pipe;
  • Fall asleep with a layer of soil and compact.

  • A pump with an overflow sensor is placed in the well, which is connected when the system is filled with water. It automatically starts the process of pumping water out of the site or into the sewer pipeline.

Injection waterproofing

A new, but already well-established way to combat dampness is injection protection. The method is costly and requires special equipment; it can be applied as efficiently as possible on any surface, even brick or foam block.

  • Holes with a diameter of 1.5-4 mm are drilled in the walls of the basement along the perimeter of the base every 20-80 cm (depending on the thickness of the walls and the density of the soil);
  • Expanding packers are installed, into which an isolation solution with polymers is injected with a pump under pressure;
  • The composition is sprayed until a damp spot emerges from the outside. The hole is closed in a day.
