It's time to take stock of the past 2016. Especially for Coop-Land users, our editors, as happens every year, have prepared the top cooperative games focused on. Plus a couple of bonus games for our taste.

10th place

Opens our golden parade, leaving behind many equally high-quality games. Created by an American indie studio and inspired by the hardcore series, the game offers an original approach to the genres.

From the outside, minimalistic and even easy, the game is overly complex, which is revealed during the gameplay. Enemies have a large amount of health, and the hero can lose all accumulated items upon death. The highlight of the game is the proposed co-op for four people, which tends to complicate the gameplay as the squad increases.

For its pleasant visual style and deceptive appearance it gets its well-deserved tenth place among the best co-op games of 2016.

9th place

Having received the lion's share of votes and well rated by our editors, unfortunately, it did not show players a new cooperative or multiplayer experience, even despite high-quality gameplay transformations and fundamental changes in the plot.

The cooperative mode seems to be created for show and does not carry any individual features with it. It is presented in the form of joint passage of minor missions such as capture or hacking, and this is only for two people. It is worth noting that in such a rich setting it would have been possible to create an interesting and versatile cooperative mode corresponding to the big name, but this opportunity was simply ignored.

For its eminent status and pleasant setting it receives ninth place.

The genre of post-apocalyptic survival with a harsh zombie theme has not gone out of fashion, and this is a clear confirmation of this. Having gone through a difficult year-long beta test, the game reached release with a bunch of new nice features: full-fledged co-op, updated locations and a new crafting system.

The introduced cooperative mode will allow players to jointly build bases, study the game map and truly survive in a zombie apocalypse. Despite the declared convenience, the network aspect has one unpleasant property: the promised maximum number of players - 16 people - can only be achieved by connecting four groups in the mode to a common host.

But even with such conventions it is a good cooperative game, for which it receives eighth place our rating.

The best existing gaming farming simulator turned out to be highly rated in the series: the number of fans increased, and the gameplay became in demand among wide circles of fans of this genre. So, it confidently entered our top cooperative games, leaving behind a dozen boring shooters and sandboxes.

A specific multiplayer mode, which is not based on any competitive nature, will allow ten players to create a working collective farm: jointly rent land, engage in plowing and construction, and become interested in crop and livestock farming. It would seem that such passive gameplay only leads to despondency, but in fact, the massiveness of different functions gives the player great interest and motivation.

For the variety of in-game elements and some originality it ranks seventh place our cooperative chart.

6th place

A heavy Lancer, equipped with a chainsaw and emitting a continuous hum, brings back nostalgic memories of fun days spent madly completing the first game. But only for a moment, because the world needs to be saved again, this time for the son of Marcus, in a traditionally bloody and epic way.

There are several cooperative modes in the game: one is a joint passage of the storyline, the second, called Horde, invites players to fight off constantly growing waves of the enemy. Both modes are based on team interaction of five people and are designed to complicate the gameplay: the larger the squad, the smarter the enemy becomes.

For the consistency of the series and good multiplayer modes it takes sixth place our rating.

2016 was not complete without fantasy Rogue-RPGs, gameplay similar to or. Fortunately, the presented game turned out to be of really high quality and even adored by fans of this genre: starting from the release itself, it received good ratings from players and the press.

The proposed cooperative for four people fits perfectly with the plot narrative, revealing in detail the characters and their characteristics - this creates motivation to conquer the cruel game world in the company of friends. Also adding to the interest is the division of characters into classes; in the basic state there are six of them. Customizable skills and long progression paths provide the ability to customize your profile, greatly honing co-op interactions.

4th place

The Spanish stealth action game, created by a small group of enthusiasts from Lince Works, gave the player a pleasant atmosphere of an oriental fairy tale, mixing bright red blood, black night and Japanese folklore in its setting. This palette puts it among the most colorful cooperative games of the past year.

The visual style, characterized by prominent lines and contrasts, perfectly complements two-person co-op. Gameplay-wise, the mode does not offer anything new: players remain with the same range of abilities, and enemies do not become smarter. But in the process, ways of joint interaction are revealed that are implicit and hidden in the single-player mode - they give the game variety and interest.

Editor's Choice

In the opinion of our editors, the title of the best cooperative game of 2016 is deservedly deserved by a small, simple, but painfully fascinating game, offering a joint story passage for four people in the mode.

Architecturally, the game does not have any complex elements; its principle is simple and clear. But the gameplay process is hardcore and even unfriendly towards the player, which is not at all a minus in the cooperative playthrough. High speeds, tons of tasks and lack of time - all this together makes the gameplay fun and even funny.

All the running around is harmoniously complemented by the locations and conditions for their passage. On a large plot map, the main places emerge, from which even goosebumps run: volcano vents, pirate ships, lost islands, long highways, ice blocks - each location determines a certain number of conditions. So, the sea gets pretty sick, and the ice is really slippery.

Having played many hours, our editors confidently declare: it is a dominant, but underrated contender for the place of the best cooperative game of 2016.

3rd place

Bald Lo Wang, diligently copying the image of a charismatic and brutal hero, judging by the high ratings of our gaming community, was nevertheless loved and accepted. Its bloody cruelty, cold skill and caustic remarks have placed it in the top three of the best co-op games.

The game, which is a sequel to 2013's comparatively disastrous Shadow Warrior, has rocketed into the top ranks with some gameplay and story overhauls. Thus, the locations, arsenal, enemies and the character himself have undergone minor changes: the map has become larger and brighter, the weapons have acquired new trashy devices, the infernal ungrateful users have clearly diversified and multiplied, and the hero has learned new tricks, become more accurate and honed his dark humor.

2nd place

Tom Clancy's plot, as usual, replete with ideas about political conspiracies and overflowing with the author's idea of a difficult alternative reality, placed players in a snowy and dead New York, broken by a severe pandemic. This post-apocalyptic setting was liked by players and appeared in our top.

The game world, geographically divided into PvE and PvP zones, provides players with a huge springboard for cooperative and competitive gameplay. The characters - agents - regularly receive various kinds of tasks, but often it all comes down to a punitive cleanup of a certain place. Entire factions of bandits, so-called cleaners, mercenaries and similar killers of various stripes act as enemies.

But the gameplay, boring in words, turns into a fun team-up with friends. With a small group you can carry out raids, explore locations, complete quests and, most fun of all, conquer the Dark Zone, which is dominated by PvP. In such multiplayer operations, you can achieve maximum team unity, using not only high-tech gadgets, but also joint interaction tactics to defeat other players.

| Dark Souls 3 was distinguished by a bold, unquestioning and bitter point for the fan in the plot of Dark Souls.

The gameplay has undergone some qualitative changes, to which fans of the series responded positively. The game has become more dynamic - this was facilitated by the introduction of new agile classes, an increase in attack and movement speed, and the development of an even greater dependence of combat on location. So, along with the dynamics, the complexity increased: the bosses became fierce, their weapons became sharper, and the main character, on the contrary, weakened.

But there is a way out of such a seemingly hopeless situation, and it lies in the co-op that is familiar to the series. Dark dungeons are illuminated by fiery clues, and the souls of the dead run from time to time in strange and dubious alleys, warning of impending danger. The idyll is complemented by phantoms who, at the call of the artifact, come to the rescue in an unequal battle with some bloodthirsty dragon. This kind of multiplayer experience remains iconic and enjoyable for any Dark Souls fan.

Bonus: ugly duckling

In 2016, a game was released that had great potential for implementing a cooperative campaign, but, unfortunately, failed miserably due to the lack of some promised aspects and an outrageously small number of story and cooperative missions.

PayDay 2. Well, this game is already suitable for those who are bored of fighting just like that - you are given the opportunity to unite in a gang of up to 4 people, make your character unique thanks to a frightening and original mask, and go off to rob another large store or even a bank. Basically, the task is to do everything as cleanly as possible without allowing the police to enter the building and surround you. Bring out as much as you can and get the title of the best among the best.

  • Processor: dual-core processor with a frequency of 2.0 GHz;
  • RAM: 1 Gb;
  • Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 / ATI Radeon HD 2600 with 256 Mb of memory;
  • Disk space: 8.5 Gb.

Dead Space 3. Taking the next position in the Top Co-op Games on PC, this is a creepy and extremely beautiful game. Don’t be confused by the fact that there is only a two-person cooperative here - this will be enough so that it is not too easy or too difficult. You will find unusual twists in the plot, dark nooks and crannies of space stations and the endless expanses of an icy planet on which the necromorphs, of course, will not leave you alone.

  • System: Windows XP;
  • Processor: Single-core processor with a frequency of 2.8 GHz;

  • Disk space: 10 Gb.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. The ability to play through a game with a friend or a whole group of friends has always attracted gamers. Back in the bearded days, we fought in “Tanchiki” on old TVs and 16-bit consoles. Time passes, technology develops, and game project developers give us much more opportunities for cooperative entertainment. The implementation does not always allow you to enjoy the gameplay - either the creators of the product do not fully understand the user’s desires, or the game itself is only suitable for playing in splendid isolation. However, there are such striking examples of excellent cooperatives that it is simply impossible to pass by.

Cuphead (PC, Xbox One)

The creators blew up the computer games market with their project. And this is not some far-fetched pretentious phrase that is usually said at presentations of the next FIFA or Battlefield part, but a recognized fact. Literally a week after the release, specialized resources, critics and gamers gave the new product the highest ratings. A lot of time has passed, but people still continue to admire this hardcore hand-drawn shooter. And the developers promised to soon release a major DLC with new characters, bosses and levels, which only provoked real fans.

Cuphead is a side-scrolling shooter with graphics reminiscent of 1930s cartoons. The virtual world, characters and opponents are made in the same style and it looks very beautiful and unusual. There is no product in the entire gaming market that could boast of something similar. But, of course, the attractiveness of the project is not in the picture that you see on the screen, but in the complex gameplay. This is Dark Souls, only in the form of a cartoon shooter. Many agree that the famous Souls series is even a little easier to learn, because there is a place for tactics and tricks, while Cuphead requires you to react with lightning speed and analyze the situation.

In this shooter you will die constantly. Literally at every step. One wrong move and your character takes damage, after which you need to start the long journey all over again, from the beginning of the level. Have you reached the boss? Now it’s time to stretch your fingers and wipe the floor from your brow, because the leaders here are incredibly complex, they have a lot of skills, tricks and tactics. Experienced gamers had to spend an hour and a half to complete some bosses. Just imagine how much willpower and nerves are needed for such long races!

In addition to being an incredibly cool game, Cuphead also supports co-op. True, you can only play locally without “crutches” - connect gamepads (or a gamepad and keyboard with mouse) and fight with a friend. The project will sparkle with completely new colors, especially if you and your friend have already completed the game and understand what needs to be done. You can also play on the Internet; for this you need to have an NVIDIA video card and a little time to search for instructions on the Internet. Although, of course, nothing can replace a local cooperative - memories from childhood immediately come back to you. Old TV, "Dandy" and tanks. Eh, there was a time.

Far Cry 5 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

The Far Cry franchise is key for Ubisoft, so the developers try to surprise us with something every time. This time the scriptwriters were able to create a truly interesting story that I wanted to study, go through and enjoy. The opponents look very interesting, each has their own well-developed history, unique character and manner of “government”. It is a pleasure to fight with such people, although first you will need to punish hundreds of their ardent fanatical assistants. And the setting of a small US town only adds drama, because we have never fought in such locations before.

We have already written our review on, and the project left behind an extremely positive impression. A huge virtual world, a lot of secondary features, even good vehicle physics. There were minor bugs at the start, but now everything has been fixed and you can play with great pleasure. In addition, the developers have added the ability to go through the storyline with a friend in co-op mode. Actually, otherwise the game would not have made it into this article.

Online co-op allows you and a friend to play through the entire story together, from the very first scene to the end of the entire story. This is a really cool feature; in other projects, co-op is usually implemented in the form of separate missions. Here you ride around the virtual world, fight random opponents, hunt or fish, fly on a plane and have fun in all possible ways. The desire appeared - we set off to complete the next mission, allowing us to get closer to the main enemy. Your friend will see all the cut scenes, fight, drive a car and help you kill bosses.

An important detail is that co-playing records progress only for the person who started the session. That is, if you started playing and invited a friend, then after ten hours of playing together, he will discover that only you have saved all the completed missions, found caches and earned funds. The comrade's storyline will remain untouched. On the one hand, the desire to go through the story has now abruptly evaporated. On the other hand, you can complete the story in two completely different ways, choose a different weapon and battle style. Twice as many positive emotions from the same plot! I think the co-op mode in Far Cry 5 turned out to be very decent.

A Way Out (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

The most striking example of a modern game that was originally designed for co-op is A Way Out. EA decided to dilute the series of its releases and, together with an independent development studio, released A Way Out. Even against the backdrop of cult franchises, this project looked very lively and interesting; many people liked the story about a prison escape, especially if you watched American TV series or films on the same topic. And after the release, it turned out that this is not just a game for playing together. Without a teammate, you simply cannot start it, since you need two players.

In you choose one of two characters, whom you will then play for. Both characters look interesting, they have a well-written plot, there are even hints that they got here by pure chance and that in fact they are innocent. We don’t have time to figure this out; we need to study the habits of the guards, look for loopholes and run circles around the courtyard, hatching the next cunning tactic. Some of the game mechanics are based on this - each character is in a separate location, you need to collect information and share it in order to later get the full picture.

Once you have a clear escape plan, the game will present a lot of surprises and will require you to interact as precisely as possible. One character pushes the basket, the second looks through the gap and controls the situation, and so on. There are a lot of examples of cooperative actions here; they are found literally at every step. Because of this, journalists, critics and users liked the game - there are simply no such projects on the market. Where has it been seen that in 2018 you need to play on a split screen! By the way, there is local co-op and online play, so there is no point in dragging a friend with a gamepad home.

It is worth noting that escaping from prison is not the whole story of our brave guys. Freedom was very difficult, but we need to move on and study the story, which will tell you a lot of interesting things about our characters. And in this process, you will also constantly interact, help, and control the actions of your teammate. Another advantage of A Way Out is that when you complete the game as one hero, you can switch with a friend and go through it again, only from a completely different angle, performing new actions. The only problem is to find a friend with the game who wants to get out of prison with you.

Payday 2 (PC, PS3/4, Xbox 360/One, Nintendo Switch)

The first part of Payday was very good - the developers demonstrated cool online co-op capabilities, interesting game mechanics and a storyline. For its time, the product was a real breakthrough, although users preferred multiplayer and looked askance at co-op. After some time, Payday 2 was released, which was so much better than the first part on all fronts that the developers even gave the original away for free. Although, absolutely all fans went to fight in a new project, where there were more missions and weapons, better graphics, and more interesting tasks. Even now, five years after its release, the game is extremely popular.

Payday 2 is a robbery simulator where you and your comrades will play the leading role. You will need to rob banks, look for loopholes, shoot, defend and hack everything in your path. The difficulty is that the successful completion of the task is influenced by a lot of factors. You need to move quickly and quietly, actively “remove” the guards if you cannot do without it, and act synchronously at crucial moments. Without well-coordinated teamwork, there is simply nothing to do here, so it’s better to recruit a couple of friends to help.

The popularity of the game was ensured by the advanced co-op. You can complete tasks in different ways, change roles, try something non-standard, combine types of equipment. You can go through any of the missions with dozens of scenarios, and all this time you will not be bored. Any wrong move and your team is already shouting on Skype that you need to act more carefully, after which the mission is started again. If you are a big fan of co-op and such negotiations during battle, then Payday 2 will definitely be number one on the list.

In addition to all these advantages, the developers also support the game with new content. Yes, most of the DLC are paid, but they are worth it and you can buy a whole set at some sale for pennies. In the add-ons, the creators delight you with new weapons that bring something new to already completed tasks, plus major DLCs add difficult tasks. Some of them look like, if not a full-fledged film, then an episode in some series about robbers. So far, there are no rumors about the third part of the franchise, which means that you can safely take Payday 2, call your friends and have a great time robbing virtual vaults and banks.

Unravel Two (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

Fans of Unravel did not greet the continuation of the story very warmly, as the developers decided to remove many game mechanics and instead provide a cooperative mode. Some people liked these changes, others decided that it was time to end the franchise and look for something new. However, if you are looking for a cooperative that is interesting and active, it will be ideal. The developers tried to make the project interesting for a new audience, plus they slightly raised the level of complexity. It’s not so much that you’ll actually sweat with the gamepad in your hands, but the plot can’t be called an easy walk either.

The main character Yarni in the very first location demonstrates to us the designers' love for little things - there is something interesting here at literally every step. The levels were created with love for the original part, but modern technologies have made it possible to slightly improve the quality of the picture and show more diverse elements. Graphics have never been the most important thing for Unravel, but it's more enjoyable to play when it's pleasing to the eyes, right? In addition to the graphics, the gameplay has also been remade quite well, because now we have two Yarnies. It's a cooperative. Although, you can “link” the heroes into one character at any time if you decide to play alone.

The virtual world is full of puzzles of varying degrees of difficulty. Some of them require you to have a very good reaction and understanding of the physics of this project, in others you need to think through a clear strategy and pull off a trick in a couple of moves. True, they usually give very little time to think - either the enemies are pressing, or the heroes themselves are directly pulled forward, towards adventure. During the first hour of the game you will get used to the controls and mechanics, and then, when your hands get used to it, complex puzzles will fade into the background and you will be able to jump without stopping.

Nice graphics, lack of violence and local co-op make Unravel Two an ideal product for a lot of life situations. Many gamers buy the game to play with their children, and adults also do not refuse to go through Yarny’s new story. Simple and intuitive controls, a full-fledged storyline and a new virtual world - what more can you ask from developers? By the way, you can download the free demo version and try the gameplay, and only then decide whether or not to take the new product to your collection.

Left 4 Dead 2 (PC, Xbox 360)

The second part of Left 4 Dead was released back in 2009, and the developers still won’t take up the continuation of the series. Valve simply doesn’t like the number 3, this is not news. And this is not particularly important, because Left 4 Dead 2 is in great demand even now - users really liked the project about zombies, in which co-op plays the most important role. Of course, the storyline here is very good, there are subtitles, trading cards, controller support and everything that we love so much. But we are interested in playing together, so let’s talk about it.

The first clear advantage of the product is the presence of official Valve servers. They always work and allow you to quickly connect with friends to complete missions, there are no problems with ping or crashes. You will be surprised, but for games ten years ago this is really a big plus; usually developers don’t support their old releases that much. In addition, there are many options to play online with friends without connecting to. We won’t write a guide about this, since piracy is all that, but if you have Google, then in just five minutes you can fight enemies, bypassing the official servers.

The second advantage of Left 4 Dead 2 is the ability to play with four players. Everyone chooses a character, after which you set off as a team. The tasks are large-scale, sometimes consisting of several conditional control points. To pass, you need to act in a coordinated manner, not waste ammo and correctly distribute weapons in the team. Someone runs with a shotgun in front, someone carries an automatic rifle in their hands and shoots from afar. You can’t just run forward and shoot in all directions, you’ll lose very quickly. This is very cool, because working in a team brings completely new emotions that you cannot get in a single player campaign.

And you shouldn’t forget about the variety of zombies. The developers showed their imagination and showed such a set of enemies that it’s even scary to imagine how they created it all. You need to find an approach to all opponents and quickly use all the tricks and features of the architecture. Some can be taken out with a regular shot to the head, you need to go to a long distance from the big guy and shoot from all barrels at once, and if you find a witch, then it’s better to fire a powerful volley to the head. Left 4 Dead 2 is somewhat reminiscent of the first films about Rocky Balboa - it seems old, but the emotions are indescribable.

The Crew 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

The first part of the racing simulator The Crew turned out to be quite good, but there was little content for gamers. In the second part, the developers corrected this defect - now the gamer can travel and participate in competitions on land, water and air transport. That is, now you can fly and sail on racing boats. And there is more land transport - off-road racing has expanded to include motorcycles and heavy jeeps, and street racing has also become more diverse. Apparently, Ubisoft reads the feedback from its fans and understands that sometimes the community’s opinion needs to be listened to.

The main advantage of this race over all others in the genre is the presence of co-op. You can literally, together with your friends (a team of up to four people), drive from one end of the map to the other, complete races, fly in the air and explore the virtual world in all possible ways. Nobody strictly “glues” the players together in activities - everyone can mind their own business, and at the right moment just join the competition and drive a couple of laps in the company of friends. opens the door to the world of the coolest co-op in the racing simulator genre.

There are plenty of activities in the game for a single playthrough. You can choose one direction of competition and drive, increasing your level of driving skill. For example, you have already played enough street racing and want something unusual. Just take a jeep and go off-road racing - it's awesome. Speed, mud from under the wheels, sharp turns and jumps on the very edge of cliffs. If you are completely tired of traveling, then take a plane or boat. The physics of flight is worked out quite well, the same with water types of transport. There is no feeling as if you are sliding through oil.

Most of all, The Crew 2 suited console owners. The fact is that games on PS4 or Xbox One are quite expensive, so gamers are very reluctant to buy story-based projects with 8-10 hours of gameplay. In the new racing simulator, the situation is completely different - you can drive for 200 hours, and there will still be interesting content in the virtual world. For fans of racing and co-op, this is a real ideal in 2018; there is simply nothing even approximately similar in capabilities on the market. Although, of course, Ubisoft has plenty of haters who will say otherwise.

Portal 2 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

This is already the second franchise from Valve, which is long overdue for continuation. In the first part of Portal, the developers showed players that it is possible to convey an absolutely amazing gaming experience if you have the imagination and resources to implement crazy ideas. At that time, every second person made portals and tried to complete levels in different ways, prolonging the pleasure. In 2011, the second part was released. It’s not head and shoulders above the original, but in some places the graphics have become more beautiful, plus new levels have been added, and we, the fans, don’t need more. In addition, the project will delight you with the presence of a cooperative for two people.

By today's standards, this is a very weak co-op, since most modern projects are cooperative for four people. But, Portal 2 came out seven years ago, then maybe the hardware didn’t allow more people to be on the same level, or the developers decided that their brainchild should look like this. The users really liked the result - they still buy the game and play it alone or with friends. All because of the unique game mechanics that no one has repeated. Maybe they have a patent for portals and one-eyed robots?

If you haven't played Portal and don't know about the gun that creates portals, then you urgently need to correct the situation. This is the pillar of the gaming industry. The weapon in your hands does not damage enemies, does not destroy walls, and is generally not intended for war. The cannon creates two holes in space that are connected to each other. You shoot at the ceiling, then at your feet, and then our character endlessly falls into the abyss. Naturally, the developers have thought of a lot of interesting levels where you will need to apply logic and knowledge from the physics section to get to the coveted exit. Nothing too complicated, but sometimes you have to think with your head.

Co-op is even more interesting, since here you need to work as a team. For example, you need to open a door, and to do this you need to stand on the big red button and stand on it. Your friend goes into another room, there is also a button there that will let you through further. It happens, however, that a friend forgets and sits on the button, and your robot is hit in the face with a door. There will be a lot of such situations - Portal 2 is quite fun, interesting and kind. There is no violence here, but there are plenty of locations for joint exploration. Eh, I wish Valve would think about it and release the third part.
