KIA Sorento is valued for its unpretentiousness, reliable power units and tenacious suspension. The Korean crossover has been produced since 2002, during which time three generations of the model have been produced. Until 2010, Sorento for the Russian market was assembled at IzhAvto, then in Kazakhstan and at Avtotor in Kaliningrad.

Sorento engines

The first generation of the car was equipped with a 2.5-liter D4CB diesel engine, as well as G4JS, G6CU, G6DB gasoline engines. The volume of the G4JS gasoline engine is 2.4 liters, and the power is 139 liters. With. G6CU - 3.5-liter unit with a capacity of 195 liters. With. It was replaced in 2006 by a 3.3-liter G6DB gasoline engine with a capacity of 247 hp. With.

The second generation of the model, which has been produced since 2009, was equipped with a 2.4-liter G4KE gasoline engine and a 2.2-liter D4HB diesel engine. Their power is 197 and 175 horsepower, respectively.

The third generation appeared in 2014. This is the Kia Sorento Prime. A D4HB diesel engine with a capacity of about 200 hp is available for the crossover. with., as well as G4KE for 188 liters. With. The line was supplemented by a 3.3-liter G6DB gasoline unit with 250 hp. With.

Sorento engine breakdowns

KIA Sorento gasoline engines are durable and rarely cause problems for car owners. Although each of them has characteristic weaknesses, certain features. All gasoline engines, starting with and ending with the G6DB, are ordinary aspirated engines that consume from 12 liters per 100 km in the city.

The pioneer G4JS on the Sorento 2.4 “digests” even domestic A-92 gasoline. It is prone to overheating in the winter season, which is due to the malfunctioning of the thermostat. The dynamics of a crossover with a 2.4-liter gasoline engine is mediocre. And with serious runs, over 200 thousand km, oil consumption begins. Of the features, it is worth noting the complex shaft drive, which includes balanced counterweights and requires competent maintenance.

More powerful versions of the G6CU and G6DB are equipped with a CVVT system and individual ignition coils, which are operated without problems in Russian conditions, despite the poor quality of gasoline. These engines are gluttonous. The 3.5-liter G6CU has a more outdated design and has proven itself well on the old Pajero. G6DB runs, depending on the quality of service and loads, from 300 thousand km. Then there is increased oil consumption, speed drops, increased noise. Sometimes owners of Sorento with a G6DB engine complain about floating faults. For example, from time to time the Check Engine error lights up, the idle speed increases. The problem lies in a faulty throttle assembly.

But not all Sorento engines are worthy of praise. So, the 2.5 CRDi D4CB engine, which was installed on the pre-styling versions of the first generation, is capricious in operation. With runs over 160 thousand km, starting on a cold one can become more difficult, interruptions in work begin, and the fuel system also presents unpleasant surprises. The nozzles are clogged with metal impurities, and scuffs appear in the high-pressure fuel pump. Partially, these problems are solved on cars manufactured after 2006. Thanks to restyling, the power of the internal combustion engine increased to 170 hp. With. Engineers have provided a new design of nozzles and turbines. This entailed not only positive, but also negative consequences. There was a misunderstanding with the nozzles, or rather, their fasteners, which can break off at a run of over 100 thousand km.

In 2009, the KIA Sorento began to install the G4KE with a capacity of 175 hp. With. This is an analogue of the two-liter G4KD gasoline unit, the resource of which exceeds 250 thousand km. Among the typical disadvantages is increased noise, some car owners are faced with wear of the liners, which can turn, which will lead to jamming of the crankshaft. This, as a rule, only happens with very intensive use. After all, erosion of the surface material of the liner occurs.

The diesel KIA Sorento with the D4HB engine is very frisky when compared with its predecessor, which was equipped with a 2.5 CRDi engine. Adherents of dynamic driving may encounter an oil burner. But this is the exception rather than the established practice.

What additives will be useful for KIA Sorento engines and fuel system?

The D4CB in-line four-cylinder diesel engine with a turbine and direct injection system holds 8.5 liters of oil. And in the D4HB engine of the new KIA, 6.7 liters of oil. Owners of Sorento diesel crossovers with these engines can be given the following recommendations:

  • Reduce the frequency of maintenance from 15 thousand km to 7.5-10 thousand km. Timely maintenance will save the life of the engine.
  • Since the internal combustion engine is turbocharged, after driving at high speeds on the highway, do not immediately turn it off. Let the motor run a little. This will extend the life of the turbine.
  • For processing a 2.5 CRDi diesel engine marked D4CB, use additives and. Make a double treatment, each time pouring 8 liters of additive into the engine. You can read more about this here.
  • To process a modern diesel 2.2-liter D4HB engine, use an oil additive. After running 400–500 km, repeat the procedure.

The repair additive will build up a dense layer of cermet on the working surfaces of the engine and extend the life of the turbocharger. Double treatment gives the following results: reduced oil and fuel consumption, increased compression, easier start-up at sub-zero temperatures. But keep in mind that the performance of the engine also depends on the health of the fuel system, the quality of the diesel fuel used.

The weak point in the KIA Sorento 2.5 CRDi is the copper o-rings of the injectors. If they are not changed in a timely manner, the injectors will need to be repaired. They are also clogged with soot due to the use of low-quality fuels and lubricants. This is a typical problem for most diesel vehicles that are operated in Russian conditions. Therefore, it is worthwhile to take a responsible approach to the choice of gas stations, and to increase the cetane index, add an additive to diesel fuel. This will reduce the load on the nozzles and prevent vanadium corrosion.

The maintenance schedule for gasoline KIA Sorento with G4JS, G6CU, G6DB, G4KE engines should also include preventive treatment with the RVS Master additive, which is simply added to the engine oil. This will fully preserve the performance of the engine, strengthen the friction units, and reduce the amount of noise and vibration.

KIA Sorento transmissions

The first generation Kia Sorento was equipped with a five-speed manual, as well as a four- and five-speed automatic. For the second generation of the crossover, a six-speed manual transmission and automatic transmission have been developed. The third generation of KIA Prime is equipped with only a six-speed automatic. Front- and all-wheel drive versions are available.

The four-speed automatic that was used on the first generation Sorento is the A44DE, made by the Japanese company Aisin. The components that fail during serious runs in the A44DE include an overrunning clutch, an oil pump, and a valve body. Later, instead of the outdated one, they began to use a more modern five-speed automatic transmission A5SR1 from Jatco.

Signs of breakdowns in the automatic transmission on the KIA Sorento can be considered jolts, kicks, vibrations, crunching when switching, howling and hum of the transmission. But the appearance of noise or knocking does not mean that serious repairs will be required, the replacement of the same valve body or oil pump. This will become clear only after a comprehensive diagnosis, troubleshooting.

If you want to extend the life of an automatic or manual transmission, use the RVS Master additive. For processing automatic transmission KIA Sorento is suitable. The additive is added directly to the oil, serves as the basis for restoring worn gears, bearings and other friction surfaces with a dense metal-ceramic layer.

But for the Sorento mechanics, you need or. The same compounds are used as an additive in the bridge and razdatka, which have characteristic weaknesses. For example, due to wear of the stuffing box, moisture penetrates into the junction of the transfer case with the box, which provokes corrosion, failure of the main pair of the transfer case, and the differential case in the transmission. This is a design flaw that the additive for the transfer case and bridge cannot solve. But on the other hand, she is able to restore worn-out friction surfaces, achieve easier and smoother operation of the transfer case, and eliminate the howl and rumble of the bridge.

Timeless classic

Sorento, which debuted almost eight years ago, has a lot of fans. For example, according to the results of sales of new cars in 2006, he was ahead of not only the trendy Tuareg at that time, but also the almost legendary Pajero. Of course, a very imposing appearance is “to blame” for the success of the Korean all-terrain vehicle, hardly inferior to the exterior of the more prestigious BMW X5 or Lexus RX. After all, it is customary for us to meet by clothes. Let's not forget about a fairly roomy and comfortable interior, rich equipment - versions with climate control and leather interior are not uncommon, as well as an impressive off-road arsenal. A solid frame structure, a continuous rear axle, a powerful reduction gear in the era of the widespread dominance of “SUVs” in a special account for true jeep drivers.

At the same time, “Kia” is not bad on asphalt - it is reliable in control and fast enough. Finally, there are many cars with an “automatic” in the secondary market. In general, the choice is quite large.

I HATE ROUGHNESS: Transmission

Before and after the restyling of 2006, a 4- and 5-speed automatic, as well as a manual box, were installed on different versions of the Sorento before and after the restyling in 2006. If you change the oil on time, they all serve reliably. According to statistics, the clutch with runs less than 100,000 km does not have to be changed.

However, there are a couple of weaknesses in the Kia off-road arsenal. Firstly, the electronically controlled transfer case CLUTCH installed on versions with automatic TOD all-wheel drive. It used to be that gorgeepers who neglected downshifting killed clutches literally after a few off-road sorties. However, even on the cars of neat owners, over time, jolts and metallic gnashing began during the automatic connection of the front wheels. Moreover, this manifested itself both on slippery surfaces and on dry pavement in turns, when the inner and outer wheels rotate at different angular speeds. True, somewhere in half of the cases, the mechanics managed to get rid of the painful symptoms for a while by changing the oil in the “razdatka” - in the post-warranty period, this operation costs 700 rubles. But if the treatment did not help, a new friction clutch had to be installed.

The cross of the front propeller shaft is not distinguished by reliability either. Signs of critical wear of the part are vibrations during movement. Unfortunately, the crosspiece does not change separately, only together with the cardan.

It is curious that often the elementary carelessness of the owner leads to increased wear of parts. For example, the difference in tire pressure is a trifle that many do not pay attention to - the electronic sensors of the all-wheel drive system perceive it as a different wheel speed and unnecessarily load the friction clutch.

NEITHER SALT OR SLUSH IS TERRIBLE: The body and its electrical equipment

In terms of corrosion resistance, the Sorento body is a fine fellow. Salt and anti-icing reagents are nothing to him, so even after 5-6 years of operation in Moscow, the car retains its presentation. Spots of rust can only come out in places of poor-quality repairs or on abrasions and scratches that have not been healed in time.

They do not recall mechanics and special problems associated with interior details. Squeaks, sometimes heard in the right corner of the dashboard, according to the terms of the company guarantee, are a completely acceptable phenomenon, therefore, they were not eliminated for free. Everything is fine with the Sorento and with the electrics. In isolated cases, a resistor burned out at the interior heater fan motor, which led to the failure of the entire climate control control unit. Basically, the owners have to change only light bulbs that burn out from time to time.

EARLY OR LATE: Engines

Approximately half of all Sorentos on the secondary market are equipped with a 2.5-liter diesel. Until 2006, this high-torque and economical unit developed 140 hp. with., and having received an updated control unit and a turbine with rotary blades during restyling, and all 170 “horses”. An excellent weapon for a real jeep, unfortunately, was not very reliable. There have even been cases of broken connecting rods! After that, I had to install a new motor, of course, under warranty. By the way, for some owners of the updated Sorento, when replacing the unit in the documents for making changes to the TCP, the importer for some time indicated the power of the old motor. Thus, the owner of a 170-horsepower car, according to official documents, drove a less powerful diesel engine and received tax benefits.

Fortunately, connecting rod breaks are very rare, and therefore Kia does not even take any countermeasures. But with the loss of power of the D4CB engine and increased oil consumption associated with the breakdown of copper sealing rings in the places where the nozzles were installed in the head, many owners faced. The defect is easy to diagnose. It is enough to disconnect the branch pipe of the exhaust gas recirculation system from the cylinder head. If smoke comes out of the pressure port, it's time to change the O-rings. It is advisable not to delay with this matter, otherwise you can also get to buy new injectors.

Alas, sooner or later the turbine also fails and through a worn seal begins to drive oil into the intake manifold. As mechanics say, this happens on almost all diesel cars, the only difference is that for neat owners the supercharger can live for a hundred thousand, and for fans to actively stomp the gas pedal, it does not even reach forty. Moreover, the replacement of the turbine, as a rule, also entails flushing the intercooler (2,800 rubles) and cleaning the valve of the exhaust gas recirculation system (3,500 rubles).

If, in spite of everything, you still decide to choose a diesel engine, keep in mind that for more reliable operation of the fuel equipment, it should be flushed at least once every 30 thousand. The operation itself plus solvent will cost about 3,000 rubles.

We recommend taking the petrol Sorento. Both the pre-styling 2.4- and 3.5-liter engines, and the new “six” of the Lambda family with a working volume of 3.3 liters turned out to be reliable and unpretentious in operation. On each of them, it is rare when you have to change the candles before the 45,000 km allotted to them.

NOT WITHOUT WEAK LINKS: Chassis and steering

Owners of cars with mileage over 120 thousand rarely visit the official service. However, not all parts of the Sorento suspension in full health reach such a venerable age, perhaps the only exception is the springs. And if the service life of the front and rear shock absorbers of 70-80 thousand km can be considered quite normal, then living only 50-60 thousand, and active drivers have even less, non-removable silent blocks of the front levers - this is already a technical problem. Moreover, more powerful rubber-metal hinges appeared on the restyled Sorento, but this had almost no effect on the service life. The front stabilizer struts are not particularly durable, as a rule, they have to be changed after 30–40 thousand.

At the same time, the steering rack, its rods and tips are quite tenacious. Everything is in order with the wear resistance of the brakes. The front and rear pads run at 30 and 50 thousand, respectively, and only with twice as much mileage do the brake discs need to be replaced.

Buying?

At today's prices, second-hand buying a Sorento hardly makes sense. As they say, this is not the case. It's not even that the Korean all-terrain vehicle, which has a decent arsenal for off-road driving, turned out to be not the most enduring in difficult conditions. After all, Kia parts and service are relatively affordable compared to the service rates of, say, Japanese SUVs. Another thing is that only versions with a 2.4-liter gasoline engine or a diesel engine can seriously save money. However, the abilities of the first Sorento are clearly not enough, while the second one has enough problems with reliability. There are modifications with petrol “sixes”.

But even here there is a possibility of a breakdown of the transfer case of the TOD transmission, moreover, at a price such cars are close to new ones. Rather than paying 800,000 for a three-year plan with a petrol V6, in our opinion, it's better to add just 39,000 and take a new car. Even with a turbodiesel, but under the guise of a 5-year factory warranty. In addition, the base Sorento with a manual gearbox is equipped with a simple but more reliable hard-wired all-wheel drive system.

KIA Sorento: Not the case

In 2009, the Sorento began a new life without a reduction gear, with a monocoque body, independent suspension and automatic all-wheel drive ... A steep cliff. Breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples and the formidable Vesuvius.

From the speakers - the sweet voice of Robertino Loretti: "Come back to Sorrento, my love!" Now open your eyes. No, you are not in Italy in the "land of the sirens" in the Campania region. The company's region is now Korea, but you really managed to return to the Sorento - you are in the KIA Sorento, which with dignity and skill overcomes bays and conquers volcanoes since 2002. Albeit not as majestic as in the Apennines. Well, turn on the siren - and go!

In its first generation, the KIA Sorento is a typical versatile SUV from the late 90s and early 2000s. The low-profile frame structure, a continuous rear axle on springs and an independent front suspension ensured good handling on asphalt and acceptable off-road capability. After restyling in 2004, Sorento began to be assembled in Izhevsk, and, according to the owners, this did not lead to loss in quality. However, as if foreseeing a great future for the mid-size crossover, KIA management decided not to update the outdated design, but to start from scratch. KIA Sorento made a decisive step on asphalt in its second generation in 2009, and this act turned out to be both timely and promising.

Sorento began a new life with a monocoque body, without lowering, with a transverse engine, independent suspension and automatic all-wheel drive. This radically changed the behavior of the car on the pavement, which alienated orthodox motorists from itself, but in return brought many new supporters to the Sorentist camp.

THEY DO NOT PARTIATE WITH THE LOVED ONE

The Korean crossover, as is customary in our time, shares the platform and units with a fellow concern - Hyundai Santa Fe. Both, in turn, received the fifth-generation Sonata passenger platform. Our hero, who appeared three years later than Santa Fe, managed to do without "childhood diseases" in this way, and after restyling in 2012, he became almost problem-free at all. The new generation confidently diverges both in the primary and in the secondary market. The price range is from 650,000 (car of 2010) to 1,135,000 rubles. (year 2012). There are not too many offers; at the time of writing, 133 cars of 2009-2012 were sold in Moscow. The new ones sold an average of about 600 crossovers a year. Which clearly indicates the unwillingness of the owners to “throw off” the car even in anticipation of updates that Koreans have quite often.

Off-road is not his element, and Sorento should not be tormented like that ...

CAUTIONAL OPTIMISM
The main problems with the car arose among those who somewhat overestimated the off-road capabilities of the Sorento, although the poetic name hinted at a certain softness rather than rudeness of road "songs" and more romantic than brutal adventures on the road. In a word, it is clear that the most problems for new crossovers in the early years of production arose with the suspension and chassis. It was possible to get to replace the thrust bearings of the front hubs not even after 50,000, but already after 15,000 kilometers. But this run had to take place in such extreme conditions, as, for example, with the famous designer Artemy Lebedev, when his motor fell off his “mumusik” (Range Rover Vogue) ... The suspension is completely independent: McPherson in front, multi-link in the back. The rear one often suffered precisely from suspension diseases, and the front one fell mainly on bearings, CV joints and other elements of the chassis. In a word, if a knock is heard from behind, you should immediately inspect the shock absorbers - most likely, they will need to be replaced. Sorento suspension seems stiff to many, but in fact it is not the most energy-intensive and heavy loads make the shock absorbers work in full range. Replacing the rear will cost 3200 rubles. a piece. You can replace the springs with softer ones, but with a progressive characteristic - 20,000 with installation. The front hub bearings are replaced as an assembly with the hub and will cost, surprisingly, only 5,500 rubles. It is clear that the “bones” of the stabilizers are also flying: from 400 rubles, if you look for a non-original one. Some owners have experienced knocking in the steering after the first severe cold. Changed the power steering fluid. In general, the suspension and chassis live the warranty period without any complaints, and for careful drivers they last much longer.

Disorder.
People complain about the not very well-fitted
interior details and cheap finishing materials

Freedom. Spacious interior - one of the main trump cards of the crossover

TO IGNITE OR TO CRUSH?

Two engines were installed on the KIA Sorento R: a 2.4-liter gasoline and a 2.2-liter diesel (on the Santa Fe New, by the way, there is also a 3.5-liter V6). While diesels have always been apprehensive in Russia, the compression-ignition engine proved to be only marginally less popular than the gasoline engine, despite the hefty price difference. For a turbodiesel, it was necessary to pay almost 80,000! And if you throw another 60,000 on an automatic transmission, we get the recipe for the perfect Sorento - diesel with an "automatic". And it's not so much about efficiency, but about the weak dynamics of crossovers with a 2.4 engine. Moreover, if the start from a place is still quite tolerable, then the elasticity, accelerating dynamics at speeds above 60 km / h upsets. Especially in cars with a manual transmission, the gears in which are selected as if not for a heavy crossover, but for a small car.

A diesel engine has a funny malfunction by the age of three years. A metallic knock appears in the area of the right front wheel ... no, a rattle! After diagnosing hubs, levers, ball joints and replacing half of the suspension, the sound, however, occurs again and again. Well, when suddenly the car loses its generator, hydraulic booster and the brake pedal “stands up”, it becomes clear that the belt drive is to blame. Specifically, the pulley on the crankshaft. The small rubber gasket that is there under the influence of chemistry on the roads shrinks, and the pulley turns. Replacement will cost 4500 rubles. (pulley with gasket - 3500 and work - 1000), but unforgettable sensations will remain for a lifetime. At the same time, diesel engines are generally as reliable as gasoline engines, and, which is especially pleasant, they easily start in any frost if there is the “correct” fuel in the tank.

Everything will fit. The luggage compartment is three-story and
in terms of volume - almost the leader in the class

SNAKE SKIN
In the same way that a snake periodically sheds its skin, the Sorento steering wheel can also “bald”. The main dissatisfaction of the owners of KIA Sorento R is caused by finishing materials, durability of the body paintwork and body kit plastic. The body, in principle, is not the most rigid in the class. For example, on a posted crossover, the fifth door may stop closing. When driving on rough roads, squeaks and crackles are heard in the cabin, especially in the rear - near the second row of seats and the trunk curtain.

But the cargo compartment is the real pride of KIA in terms of capacity. It is divided into three levels, under the raised floor there is a huge niche, under which there is another, technological one. In total, the trunk volume reaches 472 liters, which provided leadership in the class at the time of release. True, this applies only to 5-seater models, in the 7-seater underground, consider it not, and behind the third row there is only a couple of bags left. In Russia, four configuration options were offered. The most expensive version was equipped with full power accessories, navigation and automatic climate control. Only old cards and not very high-quality sound of the audio system can disappoint. Failures of electrical equipment do not annoy, but there may be minor misunderstandings like a different tuning grid for the radio receiver of cars from the USA. But the instability of the paint of body panels and body kit parts, alas, is very typical. There are no frankly corrosive places in the Sorento of the second generation, but damage to the paintwork can become foci of the spread of the “red plague”. And getting chips and scratches, as it turned out, is very simple. Body parts, however, are inexpensive - from 100 to 300 dollars, depending on the degree of eminence of the manufacturer and the completeness of the spare part. The rear bumper consists of two parts, the lower one is more often damaged, by the way, it is quite expensive - about 10,000 rubles. - and almost never found in the original. In a word, when driving over rough terrain, you need to be more careful.

Numerical superiority.
Most aftermarket engines are gasoline

FACE TO THE ASPHALT

If the first generation Sorento could still portray something on a fairly serious off-road, then the new generation can be called not off-road, but “all-weather”. Automatic all-wheel drive and a ground clearance of 185 mm, in principle, allow you to move carefully even on badly broken roads, but it's not worth the risk. Yes, and skill is needed ... Not only is the geometric cross-country ability not pleasing, but also the drive connection clutch does not provide sufficient force in difficult conditions. But there are also front-wheel drive Sorento! Here, even the traction control system will not help, no matter how much ESP is turned off. However, we must pay tribute to the KIA crossover: there are practically no breakdowns of the all-wheel drive clutch, and therefore you cannot call it helpless. It is important not to overestimate the capabilities of the car.

The KIA Sorento crossover is perfect for those who need, as they say, a lot of all-wheel drive car for little money. Since the brand at the time of the release of the model has not yet fallen into the category of prestigious ones, the prices for it are added up without taking into account the costs of reputation. Especially in the secondary market. Here you can find Sorento Russian, Kazakh and American assembly. The vast majority - Russian (from Izhevsk and later - from Kaliningrad). Since the assembly is “screwdriver”, we can say that all cars of the Old World are Korean, which is good news. From the recommendations of the general plan, you can, as always, advise to be extremely careful about the traces of an accident and possible body repairs, so that after that you do not encounter growing rust and cracks in the power elements of the body.

So, if everything is taken into account, feel free to drive - because the old love does not age and does not rust. Therefore, it is never too late to return to Sorrento and return to Sorento.

Owner's opinion: Anton, KIA Sorento, gasoline 2.4, 2010.
I bought a car by chance at a very good price two years ago and I'm not going to change unless I get the same diesel one. My Sorento is assembled in Kazakhstan, which can be recognized by the VIN that starts with XWW. I have long dreamed of a big crossover, and this one fully meets my expectations. And, by the way, it is quite passable! I often go fishing with my friends on the Oka, so my "sorik" does not give in even to Pajero! I didn’t do anything major, I refused the official service right away. I only changed the windshield - from a small pebble it went cracked. The expense is still disappointing. In the city, less than 16 liters does not work. That's why I want a diesel...

The first generation of the frame SUV Kia Sorento I appeared in 2002. In 2006, the model underwent a restyling, which slightly changed its appearance and the ICE line. In 2009, the second generation Sorento was released.

For the Russian market, Sorento (BL) was originally assembled in South Korea, but for some time now its production has been going on in Russia.

Pre-styling Sorento models were produced with a 2.5-liter CRDi diesel turbocharged 140-horsepower engine and two atmospheric gasoline-powered ones - 2.4 and 3.5 liters (139 and 195 forces). After restyling diesel 2.5l. they boosted up to 170 “horses”, and a 3.3-liter 248-horsepower engine began to be introduced into the gasoline line. Also in the automotive market you can find a few restyled versions of cars with a 3.3l engine. (238hp) and 3.8l. (262hp).

Modifications and characteristics of the first generation Kia Sorento engines

Most of the “hemorrhoids” were delivered to their owners by the diesel Sorento. The reasons for most of his troubles lie in the low quality of Russian diesel fuel. The elements of the fuel system begin to suffer first, then the engine starts to work intermittently, sometimes it becomes difficult to start it.

Russian diesel fuel does not have sufficient fat content, which affects the quality of lubrication of high-pressure fuel pump elements, and scoring appears in it. Metal particles then enter the fuel supply channels, the tank and the injectors.

Very often, when trying to replace glow plugs on a diesel Sorento, owners encountered the problem of sticking a candle. Particularly strong motorists broke a candle when trying to rip it off.

A bad start of a diesel engine or its sudden stop during operation is associated with an overflow of injectors. Such a problem usually begins to manifest itself after 150 thousand kilometers. It is treated by replacing or repairing injectors.

The restyled diesel engine also did not please its owners. At high speeds, a car moving with a load broke off a connecting rod on one of the ICE pistons, and then the piston split the engine from the inside. The unit had to be changed after that. The cases are rare, but they have happened. This happened in the interval of 30-80 thousand km.

Also, the updated diesel internal combustion engine became famous for the breakage of the bolt securing the nozzle, which led to its jumping out during operation. Most often this concerned the fourth nozzle. This happened after 70 thousand kilometers. The manufacturer recognized the problem, and replaced the bolt with a more reliable one.

There are no big complaints about the turbocharger. But on an updated diesel engine, it fails more often. A whistling sound and the appearance of oil in the air duct will inform you of his imminent death. Usually, all these phenomena begin after 100 thousand km, and the turbine resource is at least 150 thousand km.

    Kia Sorento I 2007

Due to the failure of the injection pump pressure reducing valve, the diesel engine may run unstable at idle. The pump itself runs more than 200 thousand km.

Gasoline engines in Sorento 1 are not so capricious, but they also have certain disadvantages. The timing drive on such motors is belt driven, and its service interval is 60,000 km.

    Kia Sorento I 2007

The 2.4-liter internal combustion engine surprises with overheating in cold weather (not all engines, of course, but there have been cases). And all due to the fact that the thermostat does not work correctly initially. The manufacturer tried to solve the problem, but in vain. Someone tried to pick up a thermostat from another car, but this did not always work. After 100 thousand kilometers, these engines often begin to eat oil (from 0.3 to 0.8 liters per thousand km).

3.5-liter engines sin by breaking the drive belt damper on a run of more than 100 thousand km. The pulley was torn off due to the destruction of the bolt that fixes it. Usually the bolt failed after a worn pulley began to work unbalanced. If this happens, it is better to replace the pulley, as it will be torn off and torn off.

Also, such a motor has a problem of air leakage through the intake manifold, due to which the engine starts to work unstably. The damper on the intake manifold can break off after 100 thousand kilometers, after which it flies straight into the cylinder.

The 3.3-liter internal combustion engine did not show any serious problems. There is a small drawback, which is expressed in a rattling sound in the first 2-3 seconds of starting the engine. This is most likely caused by insufficient lubrication at the beginning of its operation.

    Kia Sorento I 2007

The alternator belt tensioner takes care of 130-140 thousand before replacement. You can not change the video itself. Enough to limit yourself to replacing the bearing.

The pump lives a little over 100 thousand km, and the coolant expansion tank can leak closer to 150 thousand. The catalyst is about the same.

Sorento manual transmissions are quite reliable. The clutch lives more than 100 thousand km.

Automatic transmission is very rare, but it can still start to "stupid". This is treated by flashing the box control unit. Incorrect flow meter readings on pre-styling cars can disrupt the gearbox operation algorithm, which will make it shift gears out of time.

DMRV lives approximately 130-140 thousand km. By the way, do not rush to throw it away and buy a new one. Very often cleaning it with a carbocleaner solves the problem.

Do not forget to carry out periodic injection of crosses and splines of the cardan shaft and transfer case.

The first generation Sorento has a fairly strong tenacious suspension. The stabilizer rods and bushings nurse almost 100 thousand km. Then the hinges of the levers fail, and behind them - shock absorbers and silent blocks. At 150 thousand km, replacement of tie rod ends and front hub bearings is usually required.

Steering rack problems have been officially recognized by the manufacturer. The rail starts to backlash pretty quickly, it can leak and knock. But this stops its wear, and replacement will be required at a run close to 150 thousand km.

After 150,000 km, the power steering pump often fails, which will be seen from the noise that appears when the steering wheel is turned out.

Factory brake pads cover at least 50 thousand km on the front axle and 90-100 on the rear. If the brake pedal began to fail on the Sorento when you press it for a long time, then it's time to change the brake cylinder. The brake vacuum pump may start to leak after 100 thousand kilometers. Around the same time, brake hoses may begin to fail, as evidenced by “hernias” on their surface.

The body is quite resistant to corrosion, and will not rust up to 9-10 years. The first to redden will be the places of chips. Over time, the plastic on body kits will peel off.

Salon Sorento is not annoying squeaks. On some specimens, the sound insulation under the windshield may creak, which rubs against the metal in the central part. In frosty weather, doors can creak in the closed position. The driver's glass may start to make a slight tapping sound after 100,000 km.

The driver's seat belt is often poorly automatically retracted into place. Moreover, replacing it and its mechanism does not solve the problem.

Sometimes on restyled models (70-80 thousand km), when the windshield blower is turned on, a clicking sound is heard. This wedges the damper actuator. Repair does not help, only replacement saves.

On the first Sorento models, released in 2002, a very weak stove radiator was installed, which was very noticeable in Russian frosts. In 2003, it was changed, and the problem was partially solved. It became warmer in diesel cars, but the driver's legs still froze, but already because of the illiterate air distribution.

The generator before repair serves 150 and a little more than a thousand km. Starter - 100 with a little.

The fuel level indicator in the tank will begin to lie at about 150 thousand km. It is treated by replacing the corresponding sensor.

Another problem that does not have an unambiguous solution is the AIRBAG lamp that comes on with a corresponding error. Often this problem appears after the "curve" installation of the alarm.

Let's summarize. The car is definitely worth its money, but not its diesel version.

A selection of reviews, video reviews and test drives Kia Sorento 1:

Crash test Kia Sorento I BL:

KIA Sorento cars were supplied to the Russian market from the head factories of the Korean concern. In August 2005, the assembly of this SUV was launched at the IzhAvto automobile plant. Four years later, the production of KIA Sorento in Russia was discontinued due to lack of funds for the purchase of car kits. In May-September 2011, the IzhAvto plant assembled 800 vehicles in order to fulfill its obligations to the KIA Motors concern.

In the KIA Sorento models of the first version, three types of power units were installed:

The restyling of the model in 2006 made it possible to increase the power of the diesel engine to 170 l / s. A number of power units was replenished with a 3.3-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 247 l / s.

The main malfunctions of the KIA Sorento diesel engine

Practice has shown that the diesel engine is the most problematic in the KIA Sorento. The components of the fuel supply system quickly become unusable, causing difficulties in starting the unit, interruptions in its operation. In the high-pressure fuel pump, friction of parts is observed, forming scuffs. Metal particles pass through the fuel rail into the tank and injectors.

The main factor in the premature occurrence of fuel system malfunctions and engine malfunctions is low-quality “dry” diesel fuel that does not contain sufficient lubricants.

In the Kia Sorento diesel, problems may arise when it is necessary to replace the spark plugs. With a run exceeding a hundred thousand km, they "stick". When twisting, the case may break off.

After a run of over 150,000 km, owners of an SUV often have to deal with the fact that the engine stalls while driving or “acts” when starting. These problems are created by overflow nozzles. They need to be repaired or replaced. The cost of new elements ranges from 8-11 thousand rubles. You will have to pay about 7 thousand rubles for the bulkhead of the nozzles. Since the difference in amounts is negligible, it is worth spending money on buying new items, as they will last much longer.

Breakdowns in diesel engines of restyled models

It was not without problems in restyled models with a more powerful diesel unit. There were cases when, when working with a load at maximum speed, the piston rod broke off. As a result, during rotation, engine elements were broken. The power unit has to be changed. Such breakdowns cannot be called common, but, nevertheless, the risk of this malfunction of the KIA Sorento diesel exists, it appears after a run of over 20,000 km.

Often, owners of cars that have traveled more than 70,000 km are faced with such a problem as the "shooting" of fortune due to a broken bolt. Most often, a breakdown occurs on the 4th element. The manufacturer recognizes the defect, in order to eliminate it, the bolts were replaced with more durable options.

There are no special claims to the turbine. Under normal operating conditions of a car, it flawlessly performs its functions up to 170 thousand. After hundreds of thousands of kilometers, symptoms of malfunctions may appear. The first "bell" is a whistle, the radial play increases, oil appears in the air duct. Repair of KIA in this case will cost 15,000 rubles. You can replace the turbine. It costs about 30,000 rubles. For installation in the service will take 6-7 thousand rubles.

The engine is equipped with a timing chain drive. On the recommendation of experts, it is required to replace it after hundreds of thousands of kilometers. Otherwise, the chain is pulled out, starts to rattle, by 150,000 it acquires unacceptable dimensions. There were cases of drive breaks after 120 thousand. Work on replacing the chain costs between 8-10 thousand rubles.

The service life of the fuel pump is designed for 220,000 km. With a run of 140-180 thousand km, instability of its idling operation may be observed, associated with malfunctions in the pressure reducing valve.

Malfunctions in gasoline engines Kia Sorento

Atmospheric power units are more stable. These motors are equipped with belt drives, which must be changed after passing sixty thousand km.

The main problems of COP gasoline 2.4 are related to overheating during the winter months. The following picture is observed:

  • the engine warms up to 100°C;
  • the pipe in the cooling system does not heat up;
  • the fan runs to cool the motor.

The cause of the problem is a malfunction of the thermostat. The manufacturer failed to fix this problem. Some owners have attempted to replace the thermostat with analogues from other models, but this does not work. Another problem with this engine is a significant increase in oil consumption after hundreds of thousands of runs.

During operation, weaknesses were also found in the 3.5-liter unit. The bolt securing the crankshaft drive pulley is destroyed. In the event of a pulley failure, it is advisable to replace it, otherwise the breakdown will soon appear again. This item costs about 5 thousand rubles.

Often, the owners of these models are faced with unstable engine operation associated with air leakage into the intake manifold. In cars with mileage exceeding 100,000, there were breaks in the damper, which penetrated the cylinder. This malfunction of the KIA Sorento is eliminated in the service for 30 thousand rubles. The concern conducted a campaign to eliminate this defect in 2005.

The owners did not have serious complaints about the 3.3 engine.

Maintenance KIA Sorento

To extend the life of the car, to eliminate many of the problems that arise in the KIA Sorento allows an attentive attitude to the technical tool, the timely replacement of elements for which a certain service life is provided. Owners should know the resource of some important components and parts:

  1. Drive tension roller - 130 thousand km.
  2. Water cooling pump - 110 thousand km.
  3. Catalyst - 120 thousand km.
  4. Steering rack - 150 thousand km.
  5. Generator - 170 thousand km.
  6. Fuel level sensor - 150 thousand km.

Maintenance of KIA, like any other car, primarily includes preventive work with the brake system. This is a guarantee of the safety of the driver and passengers. After a run of 40,000 km, the KIA pads on the front discs need to be replaced. The rear elements last longer, they can be changed after a hundred thousand runs. At the same time, the vacuum pump may become unusable. It is required to check the integrity of the hoses, on which hernial formations occur, creating a risk of rupture.

Periodically, it is necessary to inject splines of the dispenser and cardan shaft, shaft crosses. The cycle for replacing oil seals is 110 thousand kilometers. Many malfunctions of the KIA Sorento all-wheel drive are associated with their wear and tear.

These SUVs are distinguished by a strong, reliable suspension. In order to keep it in excellent condition, after ninety thousand kilometers it is necessary to replace the bushings and stabilizer struts, after 120,000 it will be necessary to replace the ball bearings, and after another twenty thousand it will be time to install new silent blocks and shock absorbers.

In general, owners and experts believe that the quality and cost of this SUV are in perfect balance. Many breakdowns characteristic of the KIA Sorento can be prevented and eliminated without exorbitant costs.
