Today, wood wall decoration is gaining more and more popularity. Many owners use it not only in country houses, but also in city apartments. Here, such qualities of wood as attractiveness, reliability and environmental friendliness come to the fore.

How to choose the material and is it possible to finish the wood yourself? Find out the answers to these questions below.

Options for wood finishes

Shopping centers offer a wide range of wood-based finishing materials. For wood interior decoration are intended:

 1. Lining is the most budget option, which differs from an ordinary wooden board with a special locking fastener that creates a good connection and a uniform texture of the wall.
 2. The lining is made on high-precision machines and subjected to special processing, due to which the assembly time is reduced and there is no need to cover the walls with varnishes, stains, etc.
 3. Gusvarblok is one of the varieties of wall paneling, made from the best tree species and equipped with a tongue-and-groove lock. Special processing of wood prevents cracking of the material and significantly increases its service life.
 4. Blockhouse allows you to create an imitation of timber. The special technology of drying the material eliminates the possibility of its deformation and cracking.

Wood wallpaper is a thin veneer glued to a thick paper base. Due to the flexibility, they can be used when finishing rounded surfaces, columns, etc. The most successful option for finishing a small area with wood, since during installation, the wallpaper does not require the arrangement of a crate that “steals” extra centimeters. They have all the advantages of natural wood.

Decorative panels are an expensive material used to decorate status interiors. Usually made from elite types of wood.

Material selection rules

Wall decoration with wood provides for long-term use, therefore, when purchasing material, it is necessary to attach great importance to its quality. It is required not only to visually assess the appearance of wood, but also to conduct a preliminary analysis of the proposals of the building materials market.

So, if a material is offered for sale, the cost of which is significantly lower than the average market price, there is a high probability of hidden defects, which subsequently will have the most negative impact on the installation and appearance of the walls. For example, wood has a high moisture index: drying at home will cause the coating to begin to crack and deform.

When buying lining, eurolining, blockhouse and gusvarblok, it must be taken into account that each type of material is divided into several grades:

 • Extra: eliminates the presence of flaws (chips, cracks, etc.), has a perfectly dried, even and high-quality surface;
 • A: small cracks and knots up to 10 cm long may be present, the surface is rough, hairiness is not excluded;
 • B: the surface has a large number of whole or fallen knots, cracks up to 1/3 of the board are not excluded, the wood processing is rougher;
 • C: boards may have pronounced defects, consisting in the presence of chips, dents, through cracks, rot.

Grade C finishing materials are significantly inferior in cost to materials of higher quality. They are recommended to be purchased only by those craftsmen who can independently carry out competent wood processing.

Preparatory work

For interior design in the apartment, you can choose any of the above materials. At the same time, all of them, except for wallpaper, will require the construction of a crate, on which the elements will be attached. Wallpaper with wood is glued to the walls in the same way as ordinary wallpaper: first, the wall is cleaned of the old coating, then it is primed, smeared with glue and covered with wallpaper.

Consider the option of lining the walls with clapboard. To finish the interior with wood, you will need the following tools:

 • wooden beam with a section of 50x25 mm;
 • drywall hangers;
 • marker;
 • plumb;
 • level;
 • roulette;
 • drill;
 • perforator;
 • nails;
 • wood screws 6 cm long;
 • jigsaw.

When buying low quality material, you also need to prepare:

 • roller;
 • antiseptic impregnation, varnish or stain;
 • grinder or wire brush.

First of all, you need to calculate the amount of material needed. To find out how much lining is required to cover a room with wood, you should measure the length and width of the wall, multiply the figures and get the area. Then similar calculations are made for other walls. 10-15% are added to the total area of the walls. They are also guided by the same number when buying impregnation, stain or varnish.

The amount of timber required to create a tree-like crate in an apartment is calculated according to the following algorithm: the total length of the walls is multiplied by the number of rows of the crate. In this case, the step width is 60 cm.

For example, the ceiling height in the apartment is 2.4 m, the wall length is 3 m.

The crate will consist of 4 rows; 12 m of timber will be required for its arrangement.

Installing wood flooring on walls

Wall cladding begins with the arrangement of the frame. First of all, with the help of a tape measure and a marker, marking is made. For vertical fastening of the lining, the lines are drawn horizontally in increments of 60 cm, and for horizontal fastening - vertically, also in increments of 60 cm. The uniformity of the lines is checked using a plumb line and a level.

Then holes are drilled along the lines at a distance of 50 cm from each other and drywall hangers are fixed. This mounting option is most suitable for wall cladding with wood in an apartment.

A beam is inserted into the suspensions and fixed.

After creating the crate, proceed to the installation of the lining. In order for the wall decoration with wood in the interior to look as organic as possible, the boards must first be cut, taking into account the parameters of the walls.

The first element of the lining is attached to the so-called "main corner", which is located opposite the entrance to the room. Fastening to the crate is carried out with nails in the area of the lock. When the next element is inserted into the lock, the connection will become invisible. Thus, the entire area of the walls is processed.

In the final stage of finishing the premises with wood, special wooden planks and skirting boards are used. They are located in the corners and along the floor. Wooden skirting boards can also be attached around the perimeter of the ceiling. When decorating the kitchen with wood, special waterproof varnishes and impregnations are used.
