The game Rust, which is reviewed in this article, was developed by the English company Facepunch Studios. The basis was the Source engine. The appearance of the game was influenced by such projects as Stalker and DayZ. The first versions were significantly different from what is presented in the game today. Only thanks to many improvements and additions, a huge variety of possibilities appeared in the game.

Background

December 11, 2013 is the date Rust was released. The review of the game should start from this moment. Initially, no one had high hopes for Rust. However, two weeks later, the number of copies of games sold exceeded one hundred and fifty thousand, which indicates great popularity among gamers.

Just a year later, namely in January 2014, Rust became the best-selling game. A review of it at that moment could be found on almost all gaming resources. February of the same year was the moment when the number of sales exceeded a million units.

The game was created by the same studio that developed the famous Garry’s Mod. Those who are familiar with it know that it has a huge variety of gameplay. The game owes its abundance of all kinds of modes primarily to the head of Facepunch Studios, Harry Newman. Thanks to his love of variety, Rust, which is reviewed in this article, has a huge number of beautifully detailed objects. In addition, the game is not deprived of regular additions and improvements that bring a lot of innovations to the gameplay.

Separation

As mentioned above, the development studio is very meticulous about its product, which led to the emergence of two projects - Rust and Rust Experimental. An overview of this branch is also presented in the article. The division occurred due to the fact that the company considered the game code to be imperfect, and a decision was soon made to create another parallel project.

Shortly after the release of Experimental, the gaming community shared. After all, they were faced with two completely different products that had the same name - Rust. A review of the game in Russian became even more relevant, as many gamers wanted to know the differences.

Initially, the branch was not perceived by players as a full-fledged game. Rather, it was considered a project for testing by developers.

Many gamers felt that creating a completely new project was pointless. Rust was a good game that needed to get rid of cheaters and improve the graphics. However, after about two years, when Experimental received significant improvements, gamers began to treat it much better, and many abandoned the original Rust altogether.

Development

Over time, the first project completely turned into Rust Legacy. The review of the game continues from the moment when the original Rust almost completely stopped updating and was abandoned by many gamers.

However, a few flattering words should be said about Rust Legacy. The game has an amazing atmosphere and excellent mechanics. Meanwhile, Experimental is endowed with more beautiful graphics and detail in every detail. Reviewing the game Rust, one cannot help but say that it is still being developed and improved. The developers regularly release updates that make improvements to every minor part of the game.

Game process

So, having looked at the main points of the emergence and development of Rust, let’s move on directly to the gameplay. The main task before the gamer is survival. The game starts with a minimum set of items in the backpack. Other resources will have to be obtained on your own. In order not to die of hunger, you need to hunt, and to build a home, you need to get wood.

Of course, the game is more interesting and fun (and easier) to play in the company of friends. It is much easier to fight off enemies and get food in a group.

The player will have to constantly struggle with various difficulties - hunger, radiation, attacks from people and animals, and so on.

At the very beginning of the game, the gamer gets the opportunity to create only the most necessary items. To gain new crafting skills, you will have to kill animals and check chests.

Survival

During daylight hours, the player has nothing particularly to fear and can freely explore the area and extract resources. In principle, this process is very similar to the popular game Minecraft. It is better to wait out the dark time in a safe place. As night falls, zombies begin to roam, and it is very difficult to obtain any resources. Moreover, you can see at a distance of no further than a meter. However, if you find yourself in the dark, don't despair. There is a torch in your inventory that will light the way.

There are various factors in the game that affect the character's condition. Avoiding radiation and cold is quite easy, but fighting hunger is difficult. You will have to constantly hunt and get food. When a critical level of hunger is reached, the character will die.

Crafting

It is presented in quite a variety of ways in the game. You can create a lot of different things, from items for housing to weapons. The first stages of the game will be quite difficult. However, when the player has the most necessary tools - an axe, a pickaxe, and so on - it becomes much easier.

Resources in Rust are limited. For example, a character will not be able to get more than nine boards from a tree. In general, extracting wood often turns into a rather difficult task. Sometimes the player is lucky and finds himself in a thicket, and sometimes in a desert where there are practically no trees. Finding the stone is much easier. It can be found almost everywhere, but you need a pickaxe to get it.

Other resources are less common and often require the use of additional tools to extract them. In this case, you will often have to compete for rare items with other players.

The game Rust is not just another project about “survival”, it is its own separate atmosphere with thoughtful physics, graphics, and a system for the player’s interaction with other users, animals, and the surrounding world. Developed and maintained by the same people who created Garry's Mod.

Rust is a multiplayer game distributed through the Steam service. Today this is one of the popular ones. There are elements from Minecraft, DayZ, 7 Days. But let's talk about everything in order. We wrote a review on Rust especially for this purpose!

RustLegacyAndRustExperimental

If you type the query “Rust” into a search engine, you will see 2 completely different games, both graphically and in everything else! The fact is that Rust Legacy is an old version of the game, which, in principle, is no longer supported by the developers, but Steam has a separate mode for switching to this version, so to speak, for fans!

Today, Rust Experimental or simply Rust receives constant updates and support. This is a completely new game with its own engine, graphics characteristics and capabilities. The command input system has been completely changed, a huge amount of clothing and weapons have been added, and the ability to buy and sell things through the Steam Workshop has been built in.

Crafting system

This game has a very well-thought-out system for crafting things, where the player has to, so to speak, “start from scratch” in order to survive in this huge world! It all starts with simple things: a stone and a torch, which helps a lot at night. You can find sticks, boards, and stones on the game map. The player can also cut down trees, other stones and ores. The speed and quantity of resources extracted is directly affected by the type of tools. For example, with a pickaxe you will get stone and ore much faster than with an ax or icebreaker.

It is also worth noting that in the game Rust Experimental, most crafts are interconnected and for individual items you initially need to craft a whole chain of other items. For example, to craft C4 you will need to extract sulfur, burn it in a stove, combine it with coal, make gunpowder, burn metal, and so on. The process seems to be complicated, but after several days of playing the player becomes involved and it is no longer possible to tear him away from the game!

Graphic arts

Even though Rust is still in alpha testing, the graphical capabilities of this game are simply amazing! Developers are constantly making adjustments to the graphics, improving the anti-aliasing system, adding new commands and settings for users. A system for changing the day and interacting with other objects and animals has been thought out here.

Update system

One of the factors that indicates the number of sales of the game (which is more than 1,500,000 copies) is regular updates of the game! Previously, updates were carried out every week, but now they are released every two weeks, but in a larger volume. The developers are constantly adding and improving almost all aspects of the game, from the console and internal menu to graphics, sounds, and objects.

The reports constantly lay out concepts of models that are being finalized or will only be developed for the next updates. Wipes, as a rule, happen once a month, depending on the global nature of the updates. The player can always test the newly introduced “features” and capabilities on special servers, both official and modified, which are developed by players.

Multiplayer mode and servers

In this review of the game Rust, it is also worth mentioning the capabilities of the multiplayer mode. In principle, he is the only one present here! The list of servers is divided into several branches: official and modified. Official ones are those that are supported by the developers, modified ones are servers with various mods and plugins, for example, Rust Oxide or Magma. The system automatically remembers all the servers you visit and adds them to a special tab.

The game provides a chat for communication between players, a console for entering commands, and a built-in voice chat. Recently, global work has been underway to introduce new things for players. Now there are more than 80 of them, some of which are developed by the players themselves and are provided for a fee through the Steam service.

Overall, we can say that Rust has room to improve! The audience is constantly maintained at the same level, the number of servers is growing every day, a large percentage of found errors and problems are corrected in updates, and in most cases developers take into account the opinions of players when developing certain “tricks”!

The game Rust, released by Facepunch Studios, almost instantly took first place in the Steam rankings and won the love of players from all over the world. The game is a survival simulator with a first-person view, in which the player will have to start his journey with one stone in his hands, a couple of first aid kits and a torch.
The game was created under the impression of such popular games as “Dayz”, “Minecraft”. The main ideological inspirer of “Rust” is Gary Newman, the creator of the no less popular modification Garry’s Mod.

So what captivated millions of players and made them buy this game even at the alpha stage of development? Let's take a closer look.
The first thing to note is the huge game world. Of course, this is nothing new for such games, but the scale is truly impressive. The game has both huge deserts, in which you may not encounter any living creatures after walking for many kilometers, as well as small cities and individual buildings, in which the player will always find something to profit from. But you should be careful - a traveler who wanders into the city always runs the risk of dying from a heavy dose of radiation. The Geiger counter begins to crackle already on the approaches to cities and small buildings, and if you find yourself inside, the radiation values begin to go off scale. If a player receives more than 500 units of radiation, his health will rapidly decrease until he leaves the irradiated area or takes anti-radiation pills. You can also find or create a suit yourself that will reduce the effect of radiation on the body, but to create it, you have to look for drawings. You can either knock them out from living creatures (which we’ll talk about later) or look for them all in the same buildings. So, no matter what, players will have to experience the destructive power of radiation if they want to improve their equipment in any way.

But it is not only radiation that seeks to destroy a person who, unknown how, ended up in this unfriendly world. There are also animals that can be divided into two groups - aggressive and peaceful.
Everything seems to be clear with peaceful ones - these are rabbits, chickens, wild boars and deer. The main goal of their short existence is to wait until a hungry player, with an almost empty “Food” bar, kills them and joyfully cuts them into meat, fat, skin and blood. They are killed quite easily, even with one stone in their hands, except, perhaps, for a deer, which, like any self-respecting deer, runs quite quickly, which makes its capture much more difficult. It is much easier in this case to use a bow, if equipment and resources allow.
But the aggressive ones are no longer so simple - these are wolves and bears, which are either ordinary or “rusty” (which clearly echoes the name of the game itself, which translates as “Rust”) - infected with radiation.

Wolves and bears, unlike their peaceful counterparts, attack the player as soon as he gets close enough to them. Usually, running at the beginning of the game without a normal weapon, you can say a lot of bad words, when in the darkness you once again hear the barking of a wolf or the growl of a bear, which immediately rushes in pursuit and gets rid of it very reluctantly.
It is recommended to kill these animals only from a distance - they bite very painfully, and in addition they can inflict wounds that cause bleeding, as a result of which the already difficult life of a survivalist becomes even more difficult. However, you can get rid of bleeding just by applying a bandage.

“Red” representatives of the fauna have increased health and damage - but the reward for killing such a monster can be a rare blueprint that will allow you to create new weapons or even buildings.
Speaking of buildings - although the game will not allow you to realize your imagination to the fullest, like Minecraft, for example, but if you want, you can do it without any problems - if only you had the resources and desire.
The graphics in the game are really good, although not the most outstanding, but the sunset in Rust is worth seeing. In addition, the game is quite well optimized and will run even on not very powerful machines.

Weapons deserve a special mention. Starting from a bow and ending with an automatic rifle, and even grenades. It is obtained mostly through crafting, and all you need for this is recipes, resources, and a workbench.
Players are free to kill each other at any time and by any means - however, there are servers where this option is disabled, the so-called PVE servers.

In the end, I would like to say that “Rust” is a worthy game and is worth spending a few fun evenings with friends, or even immersing yourself in its world for several weeks, exploring a huge world in which almost everyone will find something to do. I like it.
You can play Rust for free or by purchasing a license on Steam.

Russian video review of the game RUST

Hello, dear readers! Do you want an unbiased opinion from one old fart about an exciting game? Then here is the second review of the game Rust from Gennadyich.

If you haven't read the first one, you can. There they talked only about Legacy, because at the time of writing the first review the game was in only one form. And, to be honest, then I gave the final grade under the influence of emotions. The game literally blew my mind. My friends and I played all day and night. They burned without sparing their time. As a matter of fact, the site was born precisely after those crazy gaming days.

Now we will talk not only about Legacy, but also about the New and Experimental versions of the game. And now I will evaluate with a cooler head and heart, so to speak, as objectively as possible.

Also, this review is dedicated to the anniversary date - 2 years since I purchased this game on Steam ( well, practically). Ready? Well then let's run! =)

A little background

At the end of 2013 (December 11), gamers around the world saw the computer game Rust and literally fell in love with it. 150,000 copies of the game sold in the first two weeks speak for themselves.

It even managed to break the sales record in January 2014 and become the best-selling game on Steam. How do you like an income equal to 40% of the amount received from 9 years (!) of sales of Harry's Fashion in just 5 weeks? Same thing. Already in February of 2014, sales exceeded 1,000,000 units...

The game was developed by, as you may have guessed, the same people who created Garry’s Mod - the British from Facepunch Studios (Walsall, England). The leader of the studio is Harry Newman. About 25 people sweat under his leadership.

The mod, accordingly, is named after him ( Whose mod? This mod is that guy, his name is Harry).

Just take a look at the number of game modes in his mod and everything will immediately become clear to you. Harry is a champion of diversity. Hence the great love for detail and all kinds of additions to the Rust gameplay (additions to weapons, detailing of any game processes and objects, a bunch of clothes, a growing crafting menu, etc.).

Fault

Harry's love for detail and excessive scrupulousness led the developers to two troughs - Rust and Rust Experimental. In March-April 2014, the developers decided that the game code was bad, it could not be scaled and developed, and that everything needed to be redone.

So the game acquired a parallel development branch with a postscript to the name Experimental, and the camp of players was divided into two or three. Of course, because the players were faced with two completely different games with the same name.

Back then there was no word Legacy, there was Rust (which is now outdated) and there was Rust Experimental, which was not initially perceived by players as a game. Rather, it was perceived as an experiment by the developers, a testing ground for the ideas of Harry and his team.

Most, including me, were perplexed why everything should be changed so radically, because the mechanics worked great. All we had to do was deal with the cheaters and improve the graphics. Now, more than a year and a half after the rework, players have embraced the new Rust. Some are forced to, because Legacy is not updated in any way and is teeming with cheaters, while others simply rethought it again and fell in love with the remade game.

Later it became clear that Rust is changing and will never be the same.

Rust Experimental or New or just Rust

Gradually, Rust turned into Legacy, and the developers called the second branch either Rust New or Rust Experimental. Now the game is called differently: “new”, “experimental” or simply “growth”. All these postscripts can now be omitted, because now it is Rust that is being developed, which was once new and experimental. Legacy is abandoned and is unlikely to receive an update. He remained in history and the hearts of fans.

Three hours to craft the building parts of a house, and then get up on an alarm clock at 4 am to build a tower of 20 floors in 5 minutes, while everyone is sleeping and there are 1-3 people on the server.

Jump along the pillars protecting the perimeter of the house to jump through the window on the top floor. And just one try...

Lock your enemy in his own house, attaching your own entrance to the entrance, and then demand a ransom for the door code. Or just put a barricade at the entrance to prevent anyone from leaving.

Oh these moments!

Legacy, unlike the current Rust, had two undeniable properties - atmosphere and completeness of mechanics. Yes, despite the less attractive graphics, the old version was more immersive. The new one only submerges halfway, approximately to our steel balls.

Girls, you understand, right? =)

And the gameplay even now looks more complete than what we see now in the game. The irony is that the developers under the command of Harry Newman are still experimenting, to say the least excrementing, on the game.

They do everything they want, but not the gameplay: clothes, their colors, styles, interior items, decorations, they hone the graphics in such little things that no one would notice if they didn’t poke their nose 30 times.

And that’s not the point, but the fact that the developers, carried away by their experiment, forgot about the original goal - a survival game. But how little it takes to be happy is to take Rust Legacy and transfer it to a new engine.

What was in the old game would be quite enough for the genuine happiness of gamers. But no! Harry and Co. decided to do it their own way - take Rust Legacy and abandon it, and instead re-make a game about survival among fashionably and variously dressed players. The result is a game about fashionable survival.

To put it simply, the guys got carried away with finishing the candy wrapper and forgot about the candy.

Don't think that I wrote all this because the game is bad. Not at all! The game has more positive qualities, and the problems of the midlife developers will someday pass. 😉

Here's the official trailer if you haven't seen it yet.

Now let's try to evaluate the game on traditional points: graphics, physics, gameplay, sound.

Grading Graphics in Rust

I stick to my opinion that the graphics should not come first in a game. We should evaluate games not for their pictures, but for their story and gameplay content.

However, updating the game did her good. The picture is juicy, light and shadows, visual effects, water, sky, everything now looks head and shoulders above Legacy. It is a fact. The Unity 5 graphics engine produces a very decent image on the screen.

But playing at “maximum speed” promises only wealthy gamers, because not all PCs can enjoy all the beauties of Rust without lags and slowdowns. More budget configs will creak and produce worse graphics. Although, to be honest, even powerful computers sometimes slow down...

And then the usual “this is alpha” pops up.

The game finally has realistic-looking explosions, fog, and weather effects. The change of day and night is impressive. Beautiful fire, shootouts, landscape, mountains. Heck, with the exception of some flaws, the game looks almost exactly as it should!

And what sunrises and sunsets...

In addition, the developers are constantly finishing it and finishing it, so it is not yet known what will happen in the end. But I really want to believe that it will be no worse than now.

And for those who have forgotten what Legacy looks like, I present a few screenshots. A little nostalgia for those in the know...

If you want, you can play it, but purely for information or to remember the past, because it has become uncomfortable to play due to the abundance of cheaters on the servers.

So, for everything that the developers have drawn in Rust Experimental, for graphics I give a rating of 7.7 out of 10. Not ideal, but close enough.

Evaluation of physics in the game

Fire, destruction, ballistics, water feel very natural. The crashes were a bit of a let down, but once the game stops being alpha, I think things will get better.

The fire spreads across the surface, burning houses and their contents.

It became more pleasant to shoot than in the earlier versions of the experimental version, but in my opinion, it was a little worse than it was in Legacy. Well, I felt the weapon there, but here this feeling disappeared...

Although, with the return of the holographic sight, the sensations became closer to the standard. Ballistics, in general, are up to par.

You feel natural in the water: movements, effects, temperature changes, running - everything is great.

But the game objects don’t budge, but it would be cool to move a box, a lamp, a barrel. For now, you can only break them... and completely destroy the house!

It’s good that at least the physics of the bodies of players and animals is present (albeit buggy).

Add shell casings flying off to the floor, physics to environmental objects so that you can kick weapons on the ground or play football with stones, add landscape deformation, the ability to grab opponents by the throat ( like in Crysis) and introduce technology into the game... it’s not harmful to dream, but it would be ideal.

So, let me summarize. For physics I give it a 7 out of 10. Something is missing, but it’s not bad at all.

Rust Gameplay Review

There is no plot, so it is still unclear who we are, where we come from, why we got to the island, what satellite dishes, radiation cities, spheres and other remnants of civilization are doing on it.

As before, the trick of the game is that while you are sleeping, enemies are collecting resources and raiding you.

In the game Rust, everything is created by the hands of players trying to survive in the harsh conditions of the island. No events will happen without us... well, except that a helicopter will fly to the island, fly over iconic places and fly away, or day will change to night and vice versa, or it will rain.

That's why it's multiplayer, so that events created by players, or better yet, by many players, take place in it.

Everything is the same as before, it’s better to play in company. It will be more difficult for one person to fight off raiders, and the game itself will be more boring ( unless, of course, you are a hermit in life and you don’t need anyone to guide you).

Still, it would be nice to add several NPCs to the game, aggressive and friendly, so that there is a full-fledged sandbox, so that they give some tasks or something, diversify our stay on the island, so as not to get bored and play with interest even alone.

“What NPCs are on a desert island?!” - you say. But did the remnants of civilization come from somewhere? A satellite dish, houses, cities, a sphere, all these objects imply the possibility of the remaining surviving scientists or whoever else, mutants in the end. And the helicopter? Where is he from, why? So there is a civilization somewhere nearby? Neighboring island? Mainland? I have more questions for the developers than answers...

Meanwhile, the developers have announced that a scientist NPC is being developed. We wait.

But oh well, let’s leave all these questions to the developers, maybe they will answer all of them for the players on the day of the final release.

Farming, crafting and construction are the three pillars of the Rust game.

The whole essence of the game comes down to the process of collecting resources (of which there are plenty in the game: wood, stones, various ores, food, leather, plants), processing them (melting in furnaces, for example) and making all kinds of items (craft), from a hammer to automatic turret.

With these resources you can and should build yourself a barn, house, fortress, castle, etc.

The construction system has changed completely. If in Legacy we had to craft all the building blocks, put them in quick slots and select them to build a house, like a Lego set, now we only have to have construction resources in our inventory. We do everything else with a mallet: we press the right mouse button, select a building block and install it, and then we can improve everything with the same button by selecting the material. Construction depends on you, some like it, some don’t. But it is a fact that it has changed dramatically.

New upgrade menu to tree

It is clear that you can collect resources not only by manual labor. They can be taken away from other players.

Raids are what attract some players and drive away others.

Some players love to raid others. And they, in turn, get incredibly angry and freak out, leave the servers, delete the game, etc. =) And this, in my opinion, is a rather strong failure in the gameplay of the game. Developers need to balance raids, somehow level the difference between experienced players who have been playing on the server for a long time and completely green, new players.

Rust is a game where veterans kill caps.

The goal of the former is to rebuild a powerful and impregnable fortress so that thieves do not get in. The second - to rob the first in every possible way. Often, the former do not engage in raids and are peaceful players (until they are shot a couple of times for no reason), the latter are aggressive and do not worry about their own housing, they are busy with raids.

Rust is a game in which there is an eternal confrontation between resource gatherers and resource takers.

The game is also gradually introducing additional gameplay features. Recently, for example, a helicopter was introduced; in the future, perhaps we will see cars.

The game also features farming in its infancy: you can plant pumpkins and corn. Most likely, the developers will bring it to mind and it will be more developed.

I think that I have outlined the main points and now I can safely put For gameplay the game is an honest 7 out of 10.

Why 7? Let me quote myself from the first review:

“Gameplay is a solid 10! A wonderful online sandbox! This is the same old school, old man's game in the sense that the graphics are not the most important thing! It’s a pleasure to play, you want to play again and again, you cherish every moment, you save, collect, rob, protect. Secretly at work, on a piece of paper, you plan to build a safe and burglary-resistant house. You think about the tactics of the upcoming night raid on your neighbors, so that they don’t notice that it’s you... Again and again. And it’s great!”

Now let me explain. The current game has moved a little away from the gameplay that more than a million people loved, becoming a colorful candy wrapper with a slightly crumpled candy.

This is why I rated it lower than before. Previously, you could spend a week in the game, but now - a couple of days at best. Construction has changed (whether for the worse, I don’t know, but it’s definitely not the same), raiding has become easier, and the game, despite some new features that were not in Legacy, still cannot interest the player for a longer period.

And server administrators have to rack their brains about how to keep players interested, come up with tasks, events, and finish the game with all sorts of mods. In general, they do work parallel to the developers. And so much so that some mod servers can hardly be called a Rust game... some are making a Battlefield out of the game, some are sliding into “contra” (CS), and some are even making Portal...

The game is still in alpha and I believe that the most interesting things are yet to come!

Rust Sound Rating

I can't say anything bad about the sound. Given the recent updates that have brought improved audio content to the game, aimed at enhancing the atmospheric component of the game, let's just say that the sound gets better and better with each update.

Explosions, sounds of footsteps, water, wind, airplane, helicopter, shooting, sounds indoors and outdoors, everything sounds very decent. The game is no longer sound dead like Legacy was.

I have no questions here, I'll rate the sound a solid 8.5 out of 10.
