The treasure hunter turned out to be very smart. The elder asked a difficult problem, but he found a way out and guessed to say the following words:

This saved his life as he managed to outsmart the elder. And he was forced to let the treasure hunter go. Thus he remained alive and was released.

There are many variants of this riddle, but the essence of the solution is the same everywhere. Our savvy treasure hunter said something like

    or a shorter version

Thus, he baffled the tribal leader. After all, if he told the truth, then he should be thrown off the cliff. And if he lied, then he should be torn to pieces by lions, but this makes the phrase spoken by the treasure hunter true and everything goes in cycles.

  • Yes, indeed, this story is very instructive for politicians around the world. Namely, that you need to keep your word and understand what you are doing. To put it simply, the Aboriginal elder had logical thinking, although he did not finish school, institutes or graduate school.

So the correct answer is that the treasure hunter said that he would be torn to pieces by lions. Indeed, in this case this is impossible, since it contradicts the words of the elder. After all, if you give it to the lions, it will turn out to be true. And if the truth is true, he should be thrown off a cliff. And if he is thrown from the cliffs, then this is a lie and again does not coincide with the elder’s statement.

One can become overwhelmed by such a task, especially when one's life is at stake. But the treasure hunter had to save himself at all costs, and therefore he had to tell only the truth, he spoke about his death with the lions, which was the truth, undeniable. Thus, the treasure hunter managed to be thrown off the cliff.

The treasure hunter turned out to be resourceful and in a difficult situation was able to save his life with one phrase. He said this phrase:

The elder of the tribe was amazed at the ingenuity of the white man, because he managed to get out. If the leader of the tribe had sent the prisoner to the lions, the said phrase would have been true, which would have meant that the treasure hunter would have had to be executed differently, by being thrown off a cliff. But if this action were performed, then the spoken phrase would become a lie. The elder was forced to have mercy on the cunning treasure hunter and save his life.

Correct answer: I'll be torn to pieces by lions.

The correct answer to this problem is that the treasure hunter said the phrase: I will be torn to pieces by lions. Consequently, if the elder decided that the treasure hunter would be sent to be torn to pieces by lions, then this phrase would be true, therefore, the treasure hunter would have to be thrown off the cliff. But then, if he is thrown off a cliff, the phrase will turn out to be a lie. The elder of the Aboriginal tribe admitted that the only correct decision in this situation would be to let the treasure hunter go. This is how the treasure hunter outwitted the elder of the Aboriginal tribe and saved himself from death.

In various quizzes, similar questions that test ingenuity and ingenuity are very popular. Here, too, the unfortunate treasure hunter, in order to be saved, needs to choose one mutually exclusive phrase that meets the conditions of the task. It will sound like this:

If after it they throw him off a cliff, it will turn out that this is a lie, not the truth. And if they give a lion a snack, it will turn out to be true (which cannot be according to the condition).

Indeed, if you imagine yourself in the place of a treasure hunter, you can get confused and say goodbye to life, which will end in any case.

But ingenuity prevails over difficulties. In this case, the treasure hunter simply confused the elder by saying:

This phrase, on the one hand, looks like truth, but on the other hand, if he is thrown from a cliff, it will be a lie. And what can we do, the stick turned out to have 2 ends. Therefore, the elder had no choice but to let the savvy hero go.

This situation once again confirms that a way out can always be found, the main thing is not to despair.

The island is UNINHABITABLE!!! It's written in the terms and conditions

And it’s really interesting how an Aboriginal tribe ended up on a desert island. Moreover, the tribe could communicate with the hunter in the same language and even come to a common decision that suited both sides.

The phrase was something like this:

There are certain inconsistencies with the uninhabited island and the aborigines; it would be better to write that a cannibalistic tribe sailed here for cannibal pleasures from another (inhabited) island, but oh well...

Most likely they would have eaten it without any options, but perhaps they have already tried intellectuals and found them inedible, now, so as not to be fooled again, they are asking such questions.

    The answer should have been:

So what should the leader do now? They will give it to the lions - it will be true, then it would be necessary to reset it. But, if you send him into free fall, that means he told a lie and you would need to feed him.

To be honest, the leader would have accused the poor fellow of sophistry, and then would have killed him himself.

To the question: A steel ladder was lowered from the side of the boat. The bottom 4 steps of the staircase are submerged in water. Each step has a thickness of 5 cm. The distance between two adjacent steps is 30 cm. The tide began, at which the water level began to rise at a speed of 40 cm per hour. How many steps will be under water after 2 hours?

Solution: After two hours there will be the same 4 steps underwater, because during high tide the stairs rise with the boat.

In simple terms, the ladder is fixed on the boat, so there is no need to apply mathematics to this task - only logic and attentiveness.

To the question: A treasure hunter used an old map to reach an uninhabited island in the Caribbean Sea. He wandered for several hours in the dense tropics until he came across a tribe of local aborigines. The elder of the tribe decided to immediately kill the intruder, but first decided to mock him. The treasure hunter could only say one last phrase in his life. If it turns out to be true, he will be thrown from the mountain onto the rocky shore. If the phrase turns out to be a lie, the wanderer will be torn to pieces by lions. However, the treasure hunter managed to escape.
What was this phrase after which the elder was forced to release the treasure hunter?

Answer: I WILL BE TORN TORN BY LIONS.

Solution: Now, if the elder had given him to be torn to pieces by the lions, then this phrase would have turned out to be true and the hunter would have to be thrown off the cliff. But if he is thrown from a cliff, then the phrase will turn out to be false. The elder admitted that the only correct decision would be to let the hunter go.

In simple terms, any two questions can be answered with mutually exclusive actions.

The unicorn behaved differently: he lied on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and spoke the truth on all other days of the week. They made the following statements:
Leo: “Yesterday was one of the days when I lie.”
Unicorn: “Yesterday was one of the days when I lie too.”
From these two statements, Alice was able to deduce what day of the week it was.
What day of the week was it?

Answer: THURSDAY.

Solution: Leo could only say that he lied the day before on Monday and Thursday. The unicorn could only tell that he had lied the day before on Thursday and Sunday. Therefore, they could both claim that they had lied the day before, only on Thursday.

Question: Vovochka bought a bar of laundry soap. After seven washes, the length, width and height of the bar of soap were halved. How many washes will the remaining piece last?

Solution: If the length, width and height are halved, then the volume has decreased by 8 times. That is, after 7 washes, 1/8 remains. Therefore, for each wash, 1/8 of the piece is washed.

In simple terms, imagine that the soap needs to be cut in half, first along the length, then the width and height. 8 identical pieces are formed, but since there were 7 washes, then the last wash remains.

Kolya claimed that Sasha stole the camera. Sasha said that he did not steal the camera. Yura stated that he was not guilty of anything. But Uncle Styopa immediately realized that only one boy was not lying. Who is the thief?

Answer: JURA.

Solution: If Kolya stole the camera, then Sasha and Yura are telling the truth. If Sasha stole, then Kolya and Yura are telling the truth. If Yura stole it, then only Sasha is telling the truth. So the thief is Yura.

Question: On the ship "Victory" several Siamese cats, sailors, a cook, and a one-legged captain Hank arrived from the southern port. All of them, taken together, had 15 heads and 41 legs (or paws). How many cats were on the ship?

Solution: Since there are definitely several sailors on the ship (that is, at least 2), a cook and a one-legged captain, we subtract them from the sum of heads and legs. After this, there will be 11 heads and 34 legs for several cats and sailors.
Next, either a system of equations is compiled, solved, and the answer is obtained. Or note that the total number of legs of cats must be divisible by 4. This means that among the remaining 11 heads, sailors can only be an odd number 1,3,5,7, etc. By searching through these numbers a unique solution is found.
In total on the ship: 6 cats, 7 sailors, a cook and a captain.

1) Move forward
2) Will fly back
3) Will remain in the same place

Solution: The ball will move forward. The inertial forces in the car push the bodies backward, but also compress the air in the rear of the closed car. This increased air pressure pushes the ball forward. For similar reasons, when a car moves in a circle, the balloon tilts towards the center of that circle.

There is an opinion that Daniel Defoe based his Robinson Crusoe Island from Cocos Island (in Spanish - Isla del Coco), and Stevenson - Treasure Island. And Hollywood screenwriter Michael Crichton used Coconut as a prototype for another mythical island - in Spielberg's film "Jurassic Park".

What is happening in this legendary place today? Alexander Ingilevich, a full member of the Russian Geographical Society, writer, specialist in underwater archeology and head of the Archeo expedition club, told AiF. Without Borders about this. Since 2004, he organized and conducted several expeditions following the campaigns of the Spanish conquistadors in Latin America - Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Panama and Costa Rica, where he looked for answers to the mysteries of ancient civilizations. And recently, together with the members of the Archeo club, I visited Cocos Island and plunged into its “golden” waters.

Impregnable paradise

On a flight through Madrid we arrived in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, a state in Central America. Then we rode in jeeps to the small port town of Puntarenas. From there, safari boats go to Cocos Island - ships equipped for diving and divers living on them. From Puntarenas to Cocos, which is 600 km from the coast, the journey by sea takes 36-40 hours. During this time, we managed to take a break from the road and acclimatize (the time difference with Moscow is 9 hours minus), and some of us even came to terms with seasickness (the Pacific Ocean rocks quite a bit). For reference: Costa Rica has two seasons, wet from April to October, when it rains every day before lunch, and dry, when there is no rain at all.

The island itself doesn’t seem that big from the sea: it takes a little more than half an hour to get around it by boat. The banks seem impregnable: the height of the cliffs reaches tens of meters. Grottoes and arches are often found in the rocks near the water. In the entire heavily indented coastline, there are only two bays with beaches where ships can moor - Chatham and Wayfair Bay. Everything else is sheer walls.

But behind them is a real paradise - a virgin tropical rainforest. When you go on a boat along the shore, you see waterfalls cascading down from the cliffs into the sea. There are about two hundred of them on the island, and during the rainy season there are even more. However, there is not a single source of fresh water. Where do the waterfalls come from? Up in the mountains there are lakes that are fed by rain. Therefore, there is always plenty of fresh water in Coconut.

Treasure upon treasure

Since ancient times, Coconut has received two names: “pirate safe” and “Mecca of treasure hunters.” They say that treasures worth almost $1 billion are stored in its depths. They have been looking for them since the beginning of the 19th century. to this day. This time, full of human dramas, is best characterized by the story of the persistent captain August Gissler.

A German adventurer obsessed with treasure hunting, in 1889 he founded an agricultural colony on Cocos and dug up almost every piece of island land, spending 50 thousand of the then dollars on it - in full confidence that the Inca treasures, looted by the conquistadors led by Pizarro, were hidden on Cocos. As a result, the colony withered away due to a weak connection with the mainland, and Gissler found only a dozen ancient Spanish coins. After 19 years of fruitless searching, he was taken off the island in complete exhaustion.

Coconut itself was discovered by Europeans in the 16th century. In the XVII-XVIII centuries. pirates used it as a base where they could stock up on fresh water and wood to repair ships. Then, according to legend, they began to hide treasures on it. Then Cocos was a refuge for whalers, and they tried to turn it into an exile prison and plantation. Both attempts failed. But treasure hunting and adventurous tourism flourished. More than 300 search expeditions have already visited this Mecca of fortune hunters, but none of them declared success. Or didn’t she admit it?!

What are they looking for in Coconut? One of the treasures belongs to the legendary British pirate Henry Morgan. The other is to the oceanographer, writer and, again, pirate William Dampier. The former captain of the English Royal Navy, Alexander Graham, nicknamed Benito Bonito, or the Bloody Blade, also buried gold on the island. There is also a known legend about the “treasures of Lima” - Spanish state and church values taken from Peru during the War of Independence (including, for example, a life-size golden statue of the Holy Virgin and Child). All this was hidden on Coconut by the English captain Scott Thompson.

Nut holiday

However, Cocos has other treasures - its unusually rich flora and unique underwater world. Because of them, the island was declared a nature reserve and a UNESCO heritage. And you can visit the “pirate safe” only with permission from the Costa Rican authorities. But even with its presence, landings on the shore of the same divers are rare - only a couple of times in 10 days, while the boat is stationed in the roadstead in the bay.

The island and the 20-mile sea zone around it are guarded by several rangers - tough guys who serve on rotation. It depends on them whether you can get off the boat ashore. They may allow it, or they may not.

When our ship dropped anchor in Chatham Bay, they came on a rubber Zodiac motor boat, climbed on board and first of all checked the documents of everyone who arrived. There were two rangers: one was elderly, and the other was a very young boy. Both had the same facial expression: self-awareness of their own importance. And not without reason, given the difficulties in protecting the reserve.

Later, while photographing the surroundings of the ranger base, I couldn’t understand what kind of mess they had there? Old boat motors, bags of nets, skeins of fishing line and even boats and boats abandoned on the shore. As it turned out, it was the property of poachers, the spoils of rangers over the past four months. Rangers do not stand on ceremony with poachers: this is evidenced by holes in the sides of confiscated boats. In addition to the Zodiacs, the rangers also have high-speed boats with powerful engines and a wheelhouse.

One of the local attractions is a suspension bridge over a stream, woven from fishing gear, fishing lines and nets, decorated with plastic and foam buoys. Beyond it, the path climbs the slope through the jungle. In some places it is covered with rotten leaves, wet and slippery. On the right is a steep cliff, on the left is a stream bed, thundering streams of water and sharp stones. Sometimes your heart freezes in fear, but then you come to a spectacle of incredible beauty - a waterfall falling from a height of two hundred meters, and this redeems everything. Below is a small lake with warm water, where you can swim.

And, of course, coconuts, after which the Spaniards named the island. Wandering along the shore, we saw newly planted groves of coconut palms and freshly sprouted nuts. At one time, the groves of these trees were almost completely cut down.

There is colorful evidence on this score from the famous British traveler Lionel Wayfer, after whom one of the two bays of the island is named. One day, sailors who wanted to please themselves, almost the entire crew went ashore, cut down several dozen palm trees, collected nuts and collected about 20 gallons of coconut milk. Then they sat down on the trunks and began to drink, toasting the king and queen. We drank a fair amount, but no one got drunk. However, the liquid dulled their senses so much that they could neither walk nor even stand on their feet. The rest of the crew who did not participate in the fun had to load these sailors into boats and send them on board. Five days passed before they finally came to their senses...

Discussion

Such an interesting name for an “impregnable” island, and one that also happens to be well-known. And this is the first time I've heard about him. You still need to have patience to get to it.
