The previous generation of tablets from Acer (A500/501) was very popular with users, it is not surprising that the company decided to continue the successful line. The A510 is the successor to the aging A500 and sits below the A700 and above the A200 in the tablet lineup.

Appearance, controls, materials used

Externally, the A510 is a complete copy of the flagship A700. On the one hand, it's a bit sad that the company doesn't pay much attention to design. On the other hand, look at the same Galaxy S3, Samsung found its own design (even if not everyone likes it) and exploit it, the same is done by Acer.

On the left is a 3.5mm headphone jack and a power button that lights up when charging and missed events.

At the bottom you can see the microUSB connector and the “Reset” hole.

The microHDMI connector is located on the left, and slots for a microSD memory card and a SIM card are hidden under the cover.

On the top left there is a place for a volume rocker and an accelerometer lock. The rocker has small protrusions, with their help it is easy to grope blindly.

The back of the A510 is made of rubberized plastic, thanks to which the tablet is comfortable to hold in hands, it does not slip out. Also on the back are the main camera and two stereo speakers. The latter have an average volume, sufficient for a not too noisy room.

There are no complaints about the assembly, excellent materials, convenient arrangement of elements, nothing creaks, does not play, does not stagger.

Dimensions

Like all tablets from Acer, the A510 is heavier and thicker than its competitors. However, many people like just such heavy devices.

  • Acer A200 Dimensions (LxWxD) 259x175x13 mm, weight 720 g
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Dimensions (LxWxD) 257x175x10 mm, weight 588 g
  • Archos 101 G9 Turbo Dimensions (LxWxD) 276x167x13 mm, weight 649 g
  • Acer A510 Dimensions (LxWxD) 260x175x11 mm, weight 675 g

Screen

The model uses a 10.1” capacitive touch screen covered with Gorilla Glass, supports multi-touch technology, up to ten simultaneous touches. If desired, you can turn on automatic brightness control, since the tablet has a light sensor.

A conventional TFT display is used. resolution 1280x800 pixels. It has high viewing angles, brightness is above average.

The screen is convenient in everyday use, the minimum brightness is enough for comfortable reading, the maximum is suitable for watching videos in public transport. In the sun, readability deteriorates, but the text or image remains visible.

Screen comparison 3Q RC0806B, Galaxy Note 10.1 and Acer A510

Summary: Good, pleasing display with natural colors, it is suitable for most tasks: it is a pleasure to read, watch videos, surf the web and play from it.

Offline work

The A510 uses a battery with a huge capacity of 9800 mAh. Let me remind you that the flagship tablet is also equipped with such a battery, but due to the “gluttonous” display, there was almost no increase in battery life. In the case of the A510, this increase is clearly visible.

When watching HD-video at maximum brightness, the tablet charge lasted for 8-odd hours.

And when reading books at a brightness of 10%, the A510 lasted 14 hours and 30 minutes.

The numbers are really impressive. In quiet use, the tablet can perfectly hold out for a whole week without recharging.

Operating system and add-ons from Acer

The tablet has the latest version of Android 4.0. You can read more about her.

Lock screen. To unlock the device, you need to swipe the lock icon to the right. And on the left side there are 4 customizable shortcuts to open the application, just "swipe" in its direction.

Acer Ring. There is a green dot in the center of the notification bar. When you tap on it, a ring with settings opens. There are 4 shortcuts around it, the default is browser, gallery, quick screenshot and settings, but you can easily change them in the same settings. The standard combination of buttons on + volume down for screenshots also works. Of the interesting: screenshots taken with the ring are saved at dcim/screenshots, and with the help of a standard combination in pictures/screenshots. To the left of the ring is a volume slider, and to the right is a shortcut to your bookmarks. Beautiful and functional addition, and most importantly, if desired, it can be disabled.

Weather and clock widgets. Two beautiful widgets from Acer.

Free version of Astro File Manager. Acer has preinstalled the paid version of Astro, its interface is optimized for tablets, and it works correctly with external drives.

Performance

The model is based on a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor with a frequency of 1.3 GHz, the amount of RAM is 1 GB, the capacity of the internal drive varies from 16 to 64 GB, depending on the modification. The performance of the tablet is at a good level, in third-party launchers, slowdowns when paging are minimal. The browser works stably, nothing crashes. In games and when watching videos, the back of the tablet heats up, not too much, but noticeable.

We have talked a lot about the features of Tegra 3, I recommend you read this /articles/2011/asus-prime.shtml#13 and this /articles/2012/inuse-prime.shtml#7 article.

Reading

As I said above, the tablet has a high-quality screen, reading from it is a pleasure, and a huge battery life allows you not to think about a quick discharge. The minimum brightness is perfect for reading in the dark, and 50-60% brightness is enough for the eyes in public transport. For reading I recommend using Moon+ Reader http://android..site/market/81/

Video

The tablet does not support any additional codecs and containers out of the box, but this problem can be easily solved by installing the MX video player or other third-party video players. With their help, the A510 perfectly reproduces most video files in resolutions up to 1080p inclusive. A good screen and battery life again have a positive effect on watching videos.

Interfaces

WiFi. Supports b/g/n standards. The tablet connects quickly and holds the signal well. There are no complaints about the module.

GPS. The tablet has a full-fledged GPS-module, Google Maps is used for navigation. A cold start takes about two minutes, then the location is determined quite quickly (about 10 seconds).

3G- in the A511 model there is also a slot for a SIM card. There are no complaints about the operation of the mobile Internet.

Bluetooth 2.1– all popular profiles are supported, including A2DP.

Camera

The tablet has two cameras - the main 5 MP with autofocus and the front 1 MP for video calls. The quality of the main camera is average, you can see examples of pictures and videos below. The front camera supports Skype video calls, but the tablet is not yet certified to work with the application, so the video quality is not very good.

Conclusion

The tablet is sold in two versions, with and without a 3G module, the amount of memory also varies. The price for the version with 32 GB of memory without 3G is 15 thousand rubles, the version with 3G and 16 GB of memory costs 16 thousand. As in the case with other tablets from Acer, it would be appropriate to call the A510 a "good" model, this phrase just makes you want to use it when you take it in your hands. A heavy, well-built tablet with good specs and great battery life. The use of Tegra 3 also has a positive effect on working with the A510. Among the shortcomings, I would note the lack of a full-fledged USB port, if you look at the thickness of the device, it seems that it would fit perfectly on the right or left ends. And, of course, I would like hardware support for more video codecs and formats.

Competitors

Asus TF300. Perhaps the main competitor of the A510. Of the advantages, I would note the ability to connect a keyboard dock and a better screen, as well as thickness. Of the minuses - the assembly, in some models the plastic back bends. The materials used in the A510 are definitely better.

Evgeny Vildiaev (

Acer launched its first Android tablet last year. It was a 10 inch Acer A500. nVidia Tegra2, aluminum body, low price and usb-host won its audience and made the tablet very popular. Yes, of course, the A500 had flaws (for example, screen grain was noticeable), but for Acer it was a hit.
The very popular Acer A500 tablet received a direct successor. Acer Iconia Tab A510.

Appearances

The tablet comes in a white box. The kit is simple: tablet, charger, micro-USB-host adapter.

The tablet itself has dimensions of 176x260x10.95 mm. Tablet weight 680 grams.

The back cover (with an influx on the upper and lower faces) is made of soft-touch plastic with a pleasant “dotted” texture (it’s like “dotted”, but vice versa). Feeling of rubberized material, creaky and not easily soiled. The left and right sides are made of silvery plastic (aluminum look). The front is solid glass.

Taking the tablet in hand, we examine and see on the left side a headphone or headset jack and a power button.

Continuing the search around the perimeter, on the upper face we find a volume rocker with tactile “dots” (it’s very convenient to blindly find where it’s “quieter” and “louder”), a screen rotation lock switch, and also (without noticing right away) a small microphone hole.

On the right side there is a microHDMI connector and a flap that hides a microSD memory card slot.

The bottom edge sheltered the reset button (suddenly your tablet freezes) and the universal connector, which at first looks like a simple microUSB.

This connector is designed to connect to a large computer (in order to transfer data to a tablet), to connect various peripherals to a tablet (via a micro-USB-host adapter), and for charging (charging, unfortunately, occurs only from an outlet - 12 volt supply). So that an inquisitive user does not use charging with a regular microUSB of another device and, having burned it to hell, does not run to court for compensation, there is a “key” on the charger connector - a groove that will not allow trouble.

Behind the tablet there is the Olympic Games logo, the Dolby Digital Plus logo, the main camera, stereo speakers (covered with a metal mesh) and an additional microphone hole (used for noise reduction). I got a black tablet, there is also a white one. Black is more like “business style”, while white is more like “youth”.

On the front side, in addition to a large protective glass, there is an Acer logo, the name of the Iconia Tab model, a front camera eye (1 megapixel without autofocus), an ambient light sensor and, of course, a display.

viscera

Fact: Approximately half of today's personal computers use dual-core processors. Fact: Approximately one third of modern smartphones use processors with clock speeds above 1 GHz. I won't beat around the bush. The Acer A510 tablet is based on the nVidia Tegra 3 platform, which means that inside it has a processor with 4 cores (plus one low power core) with a clock speed of up to 1.3 GHz per core. Cortex A9.

1 GB of RAM is installed, which is more than enough for the most resource-intensive tasks (yes, games, to be honest). Thanks to the efforts of nVidia, the Tegra Zone brand store already has a bunch of games for the platform, optimized, beautiful and simply modern.

About 27.5 gigabytes of internal memory is available to the user (in the 32 GB model). If this is not enough for you, feel free to put a 64 GB microSD card and 96 GB in your pocket, that is, a backpack.

Display - TN matrix, 10.1 inches in size, resolution 1280 * 800, 262 thousand colors. The screen quality is not bad, but not the best, the viewing angles are sufficient, the brightness - with a margin. Auto-brightness works well, although the operation of the sensor is visible (with a sharp change in lighting conditions). Photos and videos look very colorful and pleasant. The eyes don't get tired.

The sensor at the display is capacitive, for 10 simultaneous touches.

There are two cameras. Front - 1 megapixel, good for video calls (720p) in Google Talk, Oovoo, Skype. The main camera is 5 megapixels with autofocus. The color rendition is so-so, but when shooting a video, everything became a little better. Autofocus catches well, if necessary, it is adjusted by tapping on the screen. When shooting video, autofocus does not work. Panoramas glue cool. Here are examples of photos and videos.

The sound system is stereo speakers, with Dolby Digital Plus software (it helps very well in films, it interferes with music). The sound is loud and clear, does not plan to fart at all. In headphones, the sound is already very loud, I listened to music a little above average. There are two microphones (noise reduction).

Wireless communications are wi-fi 802.11n (of course, with support for b and g), as well as Bluetooth 2.1 EDR. There is a digital compass and GPS. The main advantage of the tablet is its battery. 9860mA! almost 10 amps. 36.26Wh.

Programmatically

As you might guess, the operating system is Ice Cream Sandwitch (4.0.3.). An upgrade to Jelly Bean has already been promised. Only a few add-ons are installed from Acer.
One of the add-ons is Acer Ring: a circle appears on the bottom panel, in the center, when you click on it, a menu is called up (it is Acer Ring), in which you can change the volume, select a bookmark, or launch one of four customizable shortcuts. The advantage of this solution is that you can call it from anywhere - just by clicking on the circle in the panel.
Also of the notable additions is its own (finished) lockscreen. Three more directions have been added to the standard Android 4 functionality (pull to the right to unlock, pull to the left to open the camera). Rather, it became like this: you pull to the right - you remove the block. Pull to the left - you choose one of your four programs. More convenient than the standard - that's for sure.

Also, a very convenient Acer Print print manager is installed - it allows you to print from a tablet to a network printer. A huge list of printers is supported. Everything that I found in the area - I found and connected. It is very convenient: in the office, at home, at a party - you can always print not only a document, but also a photo, a web page, a letter. In life - very useful, especially when you consider that Polaris Office is already preinstalled.

Among other things, there is an ASTRO file manager, an AUPEIO! Internet player, a clear.fi multimedia file manager, a multimedia server, a kerchief, an antivirus, a Zinio kiosk, a LumiRead reader - in general, not very loaded and heaped. But everything will come in handy.

In work

Of course, the first thing I decided to load 4 cores - failed. Everything flew and did not buggy. The brakes were not achieved. The tablet did not warm up much (heating occurs on the right, closer to the HDMI output, apparently the processor is located there). The usual Quadrant gave out about 3800 parrots - for some reason worse than the HTC One X (perhaps the resolution affects this). Movies are very enjoyable to watch. FullHD does not slow down, the sound is good. I installed Dice Player, downloaded my favorite series and just watched it on vacation.

In the meantime, I showed my grandparents photos from a DSLR connected via USB, very effectively. Flash drives, card readers, cameras, mice, keyboards - everything is recognized and works. NTFS understands too. Unless you can simultaneously charge the tablet and connect the USB flash drive.

It is worth mentioning the time of work at the end - because people remember only the beginning and end of the conversation. So. The operating time with the display on and wi-fi is almost 14 hours (the claimed 15 hours, I think, are achieved very easily)! I specifically checked the battery. This is a very good result. For me, the best result. In practice, this is “leave the charge at home”. Well, or like this: I put the tablet on the table, without turning it off, left for a week. Arrived - the tablet was turned on, and the charge fell by only 5%.

Price - from 500 dollars.

The world of Windows 8 devices is very diverse - there are tablets, and laptops, and their various hybrids, transformers, as well as strange slider devices. I already had a chance to meet one of their representatives, namely the Acer Iconia W700 (review), which seemed like an excellent candidate for purchase, as it had rich functionality with adequate tablet dimensions, interesting accessories and powerful hardware, typical for the latest ultrabooks.

Now its little brother has fallen into my hands: the Acer Iconia W510 tablet, which is a more mobile solution, and even less expensive, built on the basis of Intel Atom, but with full Windows 8 and a keyboard dock that turns the tablet into a compact laptop. Let's take a closer look at it.

Video review and unboxing

Design, construction and equipment

The device comes in a massive box that includes not only a tablet, but also a keyboard dock, which is also an additional battery that increases the tablet's 9-hour operating time by another 9 hours. In addition, in the package you can find a power adapter (1500 mA), a wire for it, various documents and a disk with system files, the presence of which in the tablet package seems strange to me for the second time. Acer, please make a flash drive or memory card with the same data. Well, a person will not specifically buy a CD drive in order to restore the system or reinstall it on the tablet if something happens!

The tablet itself looks like its relative W700, only it is made of plastic and weighs much less, and it seems incredibly compact even by the standards of similar 10” Android tablets. The screen with a diagonal of 10.1”, a resolution of 1366x768 and IPS technology, is covered with Gorilla Glass 2. The display has excellent viewing angles, and the picture looks very nice.

On the front side, there is also a front-facing HD camera with a resolution of 2 megapixels, an ambient light sensor and a Windows touch button under the screen. One of the two stereo speakers is placed on the left side of the tablet, while the second is located on the right side, along with a microSD slot, micro-USB, micro-HDMI connectors, volume buttons and a microphone. The Acer W510 prototypes also had a slot for a SIM card on this side, but for some reason it was decided to abandon this interesting addition in the commercial version of the device. The top end of the device is equipped with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, an auto-rotate screen slider and a power button. Below - only connectors for the docking station and a connector for a branded charger. On the rear panel there is an 8-megapixel camera with a flash, another microphone, an NFC sticker informing us that the tablet supports this technology, the Acer logo, Windows 8 and Intel Atom.

There are no complaints about the assembly of the tablet: nothing creaks, does not play, does not fail. In the hands lies perfectly, thanks to the size and weight. I would even say that this is the most comfortable of all 10.1” tablets that I have ever held in my hands.

Let's move on to the docking station. It is a standard keyboard with an optional battery. Its capacity is not indicated in the specifications of the device, but it can be assumed that it is similar to a tablet battery, as it allows you to extend autonomous use by 2 times and reach 18 hours without an outlet. The dock itself is very light and completely plastic. It seems to me that a few extra grams would not hurt him, since when working with the entire structure on his knees, the screen outweighs the keyboard. On the table, everything stands firmly and does not outweigh anything. Of the advantages of the dock: an additional USB port, a convenient touchpad and a comfortable keyboard, on which for some reason two Fn keys were placed. There is a charging indicator.

The tablet is attached to the dock using a special compartment and snaps into place with a slider. Due to the fact that the mount is on a hinge, the tablet screen can be rotated 295 degrees. The assembly of the dock is a little worse than the tablet, and it feels cheaper, but still there is nothing to complain about.

Software

The tablet runs full Windows 8 32-Bit. The set of pre-installed software and software is practically no different from the Acer W700, so let me send you to its review. Of the interesting things in this model is the Always On mode, in which the device remains always on and works by analogy with a smartphone. The Acer W510 is the world's first Intel-based tablet to feature Acer's Always On technology and is guaranteed up to 3 weeks of standby time.

Curiously, due to the screen resolution used, some interface elements may not fit on it. This is eloquently notified to us by the item in the screen resolution settings. I would also recommend reducing the size of icons, fonts and icons on the taskbar.

Camera

Unlike the Acer W700, the W510 received an 8-megapixel camera module, a more adequate set of resolutions in which you can shoot (without any 1944p, etc.), and most importantly, it takes much better photos and videos. Of course, shooting on a tablet is bad manners, but a good camera at hand is never superfluous, you never know where it comes in handy.

User experience and tests

The Acer Iconia W510 is powered by the latest 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2760 processor with Imagination SGX545 graphics, designed specifically for Windows 8 tablets, with 2GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of storage. In my case, this is a 64 GB version of the tablet, but only 46.6 GB of the entire memory array is available, of which only 22 GB is given to the needs of the user. It's scary to think what's going on in the 32GB version.

Due to the fact that the processor has hardware support for 1080p video, the tablet spins it without problems, however, it may first need to “warm up”. The test Full HD movie was pretty slow for the first few minutes of viewing, but then it completely stopped slowing down. In the mode of watching such a video, the Acer W510 is discharged by 25% per hour, so the device will last about 4 hours. With the dock connected, the tablet lasted almost 8 hours, draining 15% per hour.

In terms of gaming performance, I have tested Cut The Rope, Angry Birds Star Wars, Jetpack Joyride, Reckless Racing Ultimate (which, by the way, is unrealistically comfortable to play from the keyboard). All games went well and without complaints. The same can't be said about the ADERA game that I loved while testing the Acer W700, which crashed immediately after launch. It is worth noting that not all games from the app store are compatible with the weak Intel Atom. For example, the 2D fighting game BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger writes that the PC does not meet the minimum system requirements for the game. At the same time, the 3D game Hydro Thunder Hurricane from the creators of Riptide GP and Rocket Riot 3D are doing great. At the request of readers, I tested the popular game World Of Tanks, but the result cannot even be called satisfactory. Starting the game is possible only after installation, then for some unknown reason an error occurred. The first successful launch of the game was overshadowed by the minimum graphics quality and only 5-6 frames per second. I also tried the 2005 PC hit, the classic NFS Most Wanted. Due to graphic artifacts, I had to set the Windows 7 compatibility mode, but even so, the game can only be played at 640x480 resolution - that is, in a small window on the tablet screen, but I can’t call such a scenario convenient. When the resolution is increased, the strongest brakes begin even on the minimum graphics.

A Windows performance score will tell you a lot about the performance of the device as a whole. As you can see, the weakest point is the graphics, which, in general, is not surprising - the tablet is not at all positioned as a gaming device.

Regarding the stability of the device, it is worth noting the strange behavior of some programs adapted for the touch interface. For example, “VKontakte Messages” refused to start after logging into the account, but at the same time they worked and sent notifications, but it was impossible to reply to messages - it was thrown out. Perhaps the application does not support the tablet configuration, because everything was fine on the same Acer W700. It also seemed strange internet connection via Wi-Fi. At times, the speed dropped sharply, but it was restored after the tablet was rebooted. However, I had to do it quite often. Perhaps a software problem caused by one of the system updates, or there was just some kind of software conflict. Or the tablet did not like my router :) Also, some complaints were caused by strong heating of the right rear side of the device while watching a heavy video, as well as slowdowns in other operations when it was minimized.

conclusions

For 24 thousand rubles (the version with 32 GB of memory will cost 4 thousand less), the user gets a full-fledged convenient tablet and an excellent replacement for a netbook with all the features of a full-fledged Windows. The performance of the device is enough not only for writing text, but also for watching high-quality videos, as well as simple popular games. It is thanks to such convenient and not too expensive devices that offer various usage scenarios and good autonomy that “tiled” Windows on mobile Intel processors can thoroughly gain a foothold in the tablet segment, and a wide variety of devices in various form factors can only play into her hands.

Not very expensive, but with full Windows 8

More and more Windows 8 tablets continue to enter the market. Moreover, almost all models are not just a tablet, but a hybrid of a tablet and a laptop. At the end of last year, we got acquainted with ASUS VivoTab, but now it's the turn to look at a similar (in concept) Acer model - Iconia Tab W510.

Recall that the Iconia Tab W510 is not the only Windows 8 model in the Acer catalog. In addition to it, the company released the Iconia Tab W700, a tablet that, thanks to a stationary docking station, turns into a monoblock (we told you about this model and).

Before proceeding to a detailed study of the Iconia Tab W510, we will traditionally study the characteristics and compare them with the specifications of competitors. The main competitor of this model is, of course, ASUS VivoTab TF810C. In addition to it, we included in the table a Sony tablet laptop on Windows 8, as well as an Acer Iconia Tab W700.

* - according to the manufacturer; in the case of ASUS and Acer devices, the thickness without a docking station is indicated.

As we can see, Acer Iconia Tab W510 and ASUS VivoTab TF810C are twins in most respects. The main difference of the Acer tablet is a smaller diagonal with the same screen resolution. As a result - a smaller mass of the device. In general, among all four models, the characteristics of which are listed in the table, the Acer Iconia Tab W510 is the most compact and affordable (its cost in Russian retail fluctuates around 24,500 rubles). However, unlike the Sony VAIO Duo 11 and the Acer Iconia Tab W700, the W510 is closer to portable netbooks than full-fledged work computers.

Packaging and equipment

The tablet came to us in a massive box that inspires respect for the product.

Inside it are located: the tablet itself, a keyboard dock, a charger, a Micro-USB - USB-host adapter, a cloth for cleaning the screen, as well as a number of user manuals and other paper products (both in the form of booklets and in the form of various leaflets).

For complete happiness, only some kind of cover is missing.

Design

Acer Iconia Tab W510 is a representative of the "transformer tablet" class of devices that is becoming more and more popular today. Like the ASUS Vivo Tab we recently reviewed, the Acer Iconia Tab W510 consists of two parts: a tablet itself and a keyboard docking station equipped with a touchpad, additional connectors and a separate battery.

Let's look at these two components separately.

Tablet

The tablet is quite weighty, but it does not look massive (unlike the same ASUS Vivo Tab - however, it has a larger screen diagonal). And when you pick up the device, you immediately pay attention to the fact that it has its own style.

Acer designers have managed what many other manufacturers fail to do - to create a tablet that looks quite original. True, for this I had to go against the newfangled trends: the tablet body does not thin out towards the edges, and plastic was chosen as the material, not metal.

The back side of the device is painted in metallic silver color. The front of the tablet is white. Acer Iconia Tab W510 style is based on a combination of white and silver-metal colors.

Most of the connectors are located on the right side of the device. These are Micro-HDMI, Micro-USB, microSD memory card slot, built-in microphone hole and speaker grille. In addition, on the right side we see the volume rocker.

The second speaker is located on the left side. And on the top side there is a Power button, a screen auto-rotation lock lever and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The bottom edge is occupied by grooves for connecting to a keyboard docking station. Among them is a connector for connecting a charger.

Dock station

The design of the docking station successfully harmonizes with the design of the tablet. Its entire body is made of silver-metal plastic, and the tablet cradle and keyboard buttons are white.

From the connectors on the docking station, we see USB 2.0 (on the right) and a charger connector.

Keyboard - netbook type. The keys are small - smaller than a laptop, and about the same as a netbook. There is a Windows button required for devices on Windows 8 / RT, as well as the top row of auxiliary keys.

When you connect the tablet to the docking station, the distance between the bottom edge of the tablet and the main part of the docking station catches your eye: it's about half a centimeter. It's a pity that the designers didn't think of making the cradle transparent: then the effect would have been as if the tablet were hovering over the keyboard. But the chosen option is also not bad - at least in that it does not try to seem too similar to a regular netbook.

An important feature is the ability to tilt the tablet back (at an angle of 295 degrees) and install so that the keyboard does not fall into view. In this form, it can be used, for example, to watch movies.

In general, the design of the Acer Iconia Tab W510 made a good impression on us. It cannot be said that the appearance of the device causes delight, but certainly there is no rejection. Yes, and with the functionality of the order.

Screen

The tablet is equipped with a screen with a diagonal of 10.1 inches and a resolution of 1366 × 768. As we remember, the ASUS VivoTab screen at the same resolution has a larger diagonal and, consequently, a lower density of dots per inch. But how is Acer doing with other screen options?

A detailed examination of the screen using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" sections Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his conclusion.

The screen of the tablet is covered with a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface and, judging by the reflection of bright light sources in it, it has a mild anti-reflective filter. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) and quite effective coating, so fingerprints do not appear as quickly as in the case of ordinary glass, but are removed more easily.

With manual brightness control, its maximum value was 270 cd / m², the minimum - 16 cd / m². The maximum brightness is not very high, so to work with this tablet outdoors in bright daylight, you will have to look for a well-shaded corner. The minimum brightness will allow you to comfortably work with the tablet even in complete darkness. There is an automatic brightness control according to the light sensor (it is located in the upper right corner on the screen frame). In complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to at least 120 cd/m² (a little too much), in an artificially lit office sets the brightness to 200 cd/m² (acceptable), in a very bright environment it increases to a maximum of 270 cd/m² (as and needed). At low brightness, there is no flickering of the backlight.

This tablet uses an IPS type matrix, as a result, the screen has good viewing angles without inverting shades and without significant color shift even at large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen. True, the black field, when deviated diagonally, is strongly highlighted and acquires a noticeable purple hue. When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field over most of the screen area is good, but in the corners and close to the edge in several places you can see a local increase in the brightness of the black field. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 31 ms (18 ms on + 13 ms off). The transition between halftones 25% and 75% (according to the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 42 ms.

The contrast ratio is typical for IPS matrices - about 750:1. The 32-point gamma curve showed no cut-off in either the highlights or the shadows, and the approximate power function exponent is 1.76, which is less than the standard value of 2.2, so the images on the screen of this device as a whole will look a little brighter, in compared to screens with a standard gamma curve. In this case, the real gamma curve somewhat deviates from the power dependence:

Color gamut narrower than sRGB:

Apparently, the matrix filters mix the components together. The spectra confirm this:

This technique allows you to increase the brightness of the screen with the same energy consumption for backlighting. The color temperature balance is good - shades of gray have a color temperature close to 6500 K. The deviation from the blackbody spectrum (delta E) is less than 10 units, which is very good for a consumer device, in addition, delta E changes little over the entire part of the scale that matters gray (dark areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance is not of great importance there, and the measurement error at low brightness is large):

In total, the screen has a good color balance, but this is where its advantages end, since the maximum brightness is not very high, the gamma curve differs from the standard one, the color gamut is narrow and the black stability in relation to the deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen is low.

Hardware Configuration Features

The Acer Iconia W510 is based on the same Intel Atom Z2760 chip that we saw in our recent ASUS VivoTab review. So it is possible and necessary to compare these devices in terms of implementation details. As you remember, this 32nm chip is not just a processor, but a full-fledged single-chip platform for creating compact and low-power devices with relatively low (for x86 solutions) performance. On the one hand, it has a fully x86-compatible architecture, but on the other hand, it is significantly limited in terms of peripheral buses and controllers, which has a noticeable impact on products created based on it.

The Z2760 has two cores and Hyper-Threading support, resulting in four threads. The cores have a dynamic operating frequency - from 600 MHz in the absence of load, up to 1.8 GHz (Intel Burst mode) in the presence of resource-intensive tasks. Recall that there is no support for 64-bit extensions and virtualization in this processor model. The tablet has 2 GB of RAM, which is the maximum for this platform. In this model, when the operating system is loaded without any applications, about 1400 MB remains free, which is probably not bad. However, it is probably not worth considering the solution similar to entry-level desktop systems in terms of performance.

The graphics core is interesting, first of all, with support for decoding modern video formats and the ability to use a second monitor connected via Micro-HDMI (in modes up to 1080p60). The disadvantages of the core include the lack of support for a frame rate of 23.976 Hz on the external output, as with other Intel processors. When working with an external display via HDMI, digital audio output can be realized. According to the control panel in Windows, this output does not support HDCP and is not capable of outputting multichannel audio tracks, but stereo is quite functional. For presentations and other mobile applications, this will be enough.

From the point of view of 3D graphics, this core should not be taken seriously, although it does support DirectX 9.3, OpenGLES 2.0 and OpenGL 2.1 interfaces. Recall that a special unit for working with cameras is also built into the chip. The modules installed in the tablet support 8 MP for the rear camera and 2 MP for the front. Video recording can be carried out in FullHD format on any camera (camera test will be below).

As the main system drive, the considered version of the tablet uses a 64 GB eMMC drive. At the same time, it also has a hidden partition for OS recovery. Taking into account the operating system and the software installed in the basic package, the user is left with about 26 GB. If necessary, you can create a USB recovery disk and delete the corresponding partition (about 11 GB) from the built-in storage. Note that this tablet has certain limitations for booting from external drives. Firstly, only UEFI mode is supported, and secondly, the “Secure Boot” mode is enabled by default. So just take your favorite universal bootable flash drive off the shelf and, for example, make a backup copy of the system disk or restore the system after a failure will be more difficult. The speed of the system drive according to the CrystalDiskMark test is about 80 MB / s for reading and 20 MB / s for writing. Interestingly, the competitor's write speed was noticeably higher - about 30 MB / s.

Acer Iconia W510 also has a slot for memory cards microSDHC, which allows you to expand the amount of user data storage. However, the speed of the cards is not very high - we got figures of 23/12 MB / s for reading / writing with a SanDisk Ultra 32 GB card. This is yet another example of the compromise that Intel engineers had to make.

To connect peripheral devices, the SoC has a built-in USB bus controller with two ports. The tablet itself does not have a standard output, only microUSB with OTG support. But the docking station has a regular USB 2.0 port. More precisely, a USB hub is used, to which the keyboard, touchpad and this port are connected. The speed of working with external drives is lower than on a modern PC with an Intel chipset - 25/22 MB/s for reading and writing against 35/31 MB/s.

The audio system has basic audio capabilities and nothing special can be said about it. The tablet is equipped with two speakers, a built-in microphone on the right side and the ability to connect a headset.

Wireless connection is handled by a Broadcom chip with an SDIO interface, similar to the one used in the previously tested tablet. However, in the Acer Iconia W510, it is capable of operating in two bands - both at 2.4 GHz and at 5 GHz, which, of course, can be written down as an advantage of the device. Unfortunately, the speed characteristics remain the same and the maximum that can be obtained from it is a 65 Mbps connection and a real speed of up to 35 Mbps with a good position between the tablet and the router (ASUS RT-N66U was used in the test). So once again we will complain that for such a high-performance device, the wireless controller is clearly frankly weak. The same chip implements the Bluetooth 4.0 controller.

The tablet model in question has an integrated NFC controller on the I2S bus, which is based on a Broadcom chip. There is also a TPM 1.2 module.

In general, in terms of configuration, we see that there are practically no differences from the previously considered model. It seems that Intel has provided its partners with a basic platform for the development of their models and the first devices will be very similar to each other. However, some points are worth paying attention to. Firstly, this is the presence of a USB port on the tablet itself. True, it is made in Micro-USB format and requires an additional cable to connect devices. In our opinion, it was still worth trying and installing a “regular” USB. The thickness of the hull allows this. Secondly, there is a modification of the device with a built-in 3G module, which can be considered an advantage among similar models. Thirdly, the device's wireless controller is capable of operating at a frequency of 5 GHz. But let's not forget about other differences - the Acer W510 has a smaller screen, it has a "regular" touch module (Asus has Wacom with support for a stylus with pressure control), and besides, the tablet does not have a GPS module.

Performance

Today, tablets with Windows 8 on specially designed SoCs are just beginning to appear, so it is still difficult to assess the prospects for this class of solutions and find competitors for them. In our opinion, after all, the main reason for choosing just such an option will be the use of "familiar" Windows, and not any speed characteristics. On the other hand, if we try to exclude the OS factor from consideration (although this is almost impossible with complete solutions for end users), then we can already try to compare products on some tasks that are popular for tablets.

Considering that the Acer W510 can be considered another representative of the base platform in terms of its technical characteristics, its performance should not differ much from the previously reviewed ASUS VivoTab TF810C. In particular, the GeekBench 2 multi-platform processor and RAM test on this tablet showed a result of 1387 points (Integer 1560, Floating Point 1392, Memory 1149, Stream 1245). This is slightly lower than the ASUS VivoTab. Unfortunately, the latter was not available to us to double-check the figures, so it is not possible to accurately determine the reasons for this behavior. As options, you can offer updated drivers or other settings for the processor frequency control system. As we remember from ultrabooks, to evaluate the speed it is not enough to know the name of the processor model, since manufacturers adjust its operation modes depending on their implementations of the cooling system and power consumption parameters. So, according to this test, the device is similar to nettops and loses in the overall standings to the best representatives on Android and iOS. In the first case, this is due to the quad-core top-end ARM devices, and in the second - to a significantly higher speed of working with floating point numbers and memory in the Apple A6X.

Testing in SunSpider confirmed that among the "tablet" platforms Intel Atom Z2760 looks great. The result at 700ms is the best among them. But Peacekeeper still prefers other solutions - Z2760 gets only 422 points in it.

The traditional tests for the Windows/x86 platform PCMark 7 and 3DMark06 (at 1280x720 resolution) showed 1303 and 455 points on the Acer Iconia W510. The first figure practically coincides with that obtained for ASUS VivoTab TF810C, but the second one is noticeably higher. In this case, we could again encounter platform optimizations or driver updates. Recall that these results are at the level of nettops with other Intel Atom models, and ultrabooks in these tests have several times higher results.

With "tablet" hits, such as Angry Bidrs or Cut the Rope, the device copes without problems. In the 3D boat racing game Hydro Thunder Hurricane, like the previous model, there are obvious performance problems, in addition to low frames per second, sometimes the entire system freezes for a fraction of a second. But in Reckless Racing and Riptide GP there were no such situations and the picture can be considered ideal.

Recall that the graphics core supports a maximum of DirectX 9.3, so games that require version 10 or 11 will not run on it. To evaluate the speed in games, we checked a couple of older projects. Need for Speed: Underground (2003) at 1024×768 on standard settings gives out about 20 fps, but sometimes the speed drops to 13-15 fps, and Worms 3D (also 2003) shows about 40 fps in matrix resolution.

As for video playback, the standard Windows 8 player can work with H.264 hardware, which allows the processor to reduce the frequency to 1 GHz in this scenario, but for some reason VC-1 and MPEG2 are not given to it (this applies to both Windows Media Player , and the player for the Metro interface). At the same time, MPC-HC easily copes with the "acceleration" of these two formats (up to 25% of the load at 1.4 GHz), but on H.264 it produces a "broken" picture. So a user who needs versatility will have to spend time choosing and configuring players. Although this of course does not apply to the tablet in question, but to the current version of the platform.

Concluding this section, let's summarize the test results. The Acer Iconia W510 tablet is comparable in performance to nettops and other devices based on Intel Atom chips. It can run a wide range of x86 programs for Windows, but you still need to take into account the limited resources of the device. So the Internet, office, casual games - all this is quite efficient. However, for professional photo processing, computing tasks, modern 3D games and other resource-intensive programs, it is better to look at more powerful devices.

It is quite difficult to compare the model with tablets on other software platforms. But in general, we see that the W510 is clearly no worse than the best representatives of the world of Android and iOS, and it implements typical scenarios for using a tablet in terms of performance very well.

Operating system and applications

The tablet is running the Windows 8 operating system. We told you in detail our impressions of this OS in the ASUS VivoTab TF810C review, so we will not repeat ourselves. We only note that all claims remained in force. So far, Windows 8 seems to be largely experimental OS - primarily because of the meager selection of applications in the Store, as well as the imperfections of pre-installed applications. For example, the Video app has almost no settings. Moreover, it does not support MKV files.

Yes, and games are still a problem: in the four months since the announcement of Windows 8, Microsoft has not been able to achieve the presence of any serious number of really cool game hits in the Store. And regular Windows 7 games on a configuration like the Acer Iconia Tab W510 are unlikely to be very comfortable to play.

As a plus, we note that Acer, firstly, designed the OS desktop in its corporate style, and secondly, it preinstalled the Acer Explorer application, which is designed to help manage other applications. It also contains a user manual and a list of recommended applications. In general, the presence of Acer Explorer should make it easier to get acquainted with the new device to its owner, who first encountered Windows 8.

Offline work

As we remember, ASUS VivoTab turned out to be a real record holder for battery life. The Acer Iconia Tab W510 does not break records, but it demonstrates a very decent level in terms of autonomy. Recall that this tablet has two batteries: one - in the tablet itself, the second - in the keyboard docking station. The battery in the tablet itself is about twice as capacious as in the docking station. Its charge is enough for about 7 hours of YouTube video playback through the Internet Explorer browser - at maximum screen brightness. If you connect the docking station with a fully charged battery, it will provide approximately three and a half hours of video playback. Thus, in total, the tablet will last about 10.5 hours, which is very good.

True, the main "battery eater" is the screen. Therefore, even if you leave the tablet simply turned on (of course, automatic screen shutdown when idle should be disabled) and do not run anything on it, the battery life will not increase very much: the maximum can be counted at 11 and a half hours. If you reduce the brightness to an average value, then a tablet with a docking keyboard can last up to 14 hours.

The remaining battery life is indicated in the lower right corner, and there is both information separately for each battery, and the total percentage of charge.

Camera

As befits a top-end tablet, the novelty is equipped with two cameras. The front one is designed for video communication and has a resolution of 2 megapixels. The rear camera - with a resolution of 8 megapixels - is designed for shooting photos and videos. Let's look at examples of pictures taken by her.

In a reduced version, the picture looks very decent, the colors are natural, and the clarity is sufficient.

However, if you look at the original in 100% form, you will have to admit that clarity is still lost in the background. This is clearly seen in the snippet above.

Shooting a page of text in daylight, the tablet coped - text and numbers are distinguishable everywhere, although we saw much better results with cameras of the same resolution.

The rear camera shoots video with Full HD resolution and very decent, almost flawless (for devices of this kind) quality. A 31-second video filmed with the rear camera of the Acer iconia Tab W510 can be downloaded (MP4 format, size 57.7 MB).

Note that by default, the video is shot at a resolution of 720p, so in order to get Full HD, you must first go to the application settings. Similarly, with photos (they are taken by default with a ridiculous resolution of 0.9 megapixels).

conclusions

The Acer Iconia Tab W510 is a nice Windows 8-based tablet/netbook hybrid, the main competitor of the ASUS VivoTab TF810C. Moreover, despite the significantly lower cost (less than 20 thousand rubles for a model with 32 GB of memory and a docking station in the kit), it cannot be said that the Acer Iconia Tab W510 is fundamentally worse than the ASUS model. Yes, it has a shorter battery life and a smaller screen, but the screen resolution is the same (hence, the DPI density is higher), and the built-in Wi-Fi modem can operate at a frequency of 5 GHz, unlike ASUS. As for the hardware platform, here both devices are on a par.

Of course, ASUS VivoTab is more aimed at professionals: this is evidenced not only by a more capacious battery and O Large diagonal of the device, but also such a specific feature as support for Wacom-technology pen input, which makes this device interesting for designers, artists, architects. The Acer tablet is more focused on mobile and non-professional use: it is lighter, more compact, more affordable.

At the same time, we still note that Windows 8 still needs to be improved in terms of applications for the new tiled interface. But on the other hand, you can safely use the usual programs for Windows 7, work in Microsoft Office (which, however, is not included in the package), and do other things that people used to do on netbooks.

The variety of tablet computers on the electronics market today is amazing. The buyer is offered cheap and expensive devices made in a plastic or metal case, operating on the basis of the Android, iOS or Windows operating system. Agree, it is quite difficult to understand all this assortment, especially if a person does not have enough information about what advantages and disadvantages this or that model hides.

In this article, we will introduce you to another interesting device that we believe deserves your attention. We are talking about the tablet Acer W510. Today we will talk about how it works, what characteristics it has, what users write about it in reviews, and whether it is worth buying it for personal use at all. In the article we will try to characterize the device in terms of configuration, design, technical capabilities and price.

Positioning

To make it clear to the user how the manufacturer positions its device, we will begin this article with a description of its concept. So, which tablet computer are we characterizing now? At what price level is it located in the hierarchy of Acer models, and who is its potential buyer?

We note right away that we are talking about a middle-class device that debuted back in 2012. Despite this, the tablet continues to be sold on the market at a price of $500 per copy. Agree, for such a relatively old device, such a price bar looks strange. However, believe me, the technical capabilities of the gadget are fully consistent with this.

The tablet is based on a powerful chip from Intel modification Atom Z2760, which means the presence of ample opportunities (large amount of RAM, high clock speed and "nimble" work in general) for the average user. In addition, the device has an exclusive design, an original and stylish body, functional additions such as a camera module and others. Plenty of memory, optimized software and good build quality all add up to the big picture and make the Acer W510 look as good as possible.

Equipment

We would like to start a more detailed description with a presentation of the device kit and a description of the auxiliary modules that come with the tablet. First of all, we are talking about the docking station. The developers of the device announced the release of the device exclusively with this accessory, which turns a simple tablet into a full-fledged laptop. As you can guess, the docking station that comes with the device for sale is an original design designed for the Acer W510. You should not worry about its compatibility (both at the program level and in terms of design and usability). By its dimensions, colors, materials of which the docking station is made, it fully corresponds to the concept of the tablet. That is why working with it using the Acer W510 is pure pleasure.

The functionality of the docking station is very wide: it can become a convenient stand for your tablet if you turn it at the opposite angle. It also has an integrated USB port and a connector for connecting

Design

The device has a very stylish appearance, which speaks of the manufacturability of the device, its wide functionality. Critics point out that the developers did not use the common style used in all tablet models (the famous "rectangle" used by both Chinese noname developers and leading brands for some of their cheap devices). The company that released the Acer W510 tablet spared no resources in creating its own design and integrating it into the overall ecosystem of its devices. In particular, this can be evidenced by a pseudo-metal case (made of plastic), consisting of two parts - external and internal. The first includes a gray outline, while the second is a dark frame around the display and the "stuffing" of the tablet itself.

In their reviews, users emphasize that the device really looks interesting and to some extent even original (despite all the variety of tablet PCs of different shapes and sizes). However, this image also has its drawbacks. For example, one of them is the dirtiness of the gadget. It is enough to apply just one careless scratch - and your Acer Iconia W510 tablet will lose its ideal appearance. To prevent this from happening, you need to be extremely careful in operation.

CPU

On the tablet, as already noted, the Z2760 chipset is installed. It supports the Windows operating system (x86), which we will talk about in more detail a little later. The speed of the processor itself is noted positively. Users claim that they did not notice any problems with the response of their tablet. There is nothing surprising in this, since in general the system here is much more balanced and optimized than the shell that comes with some Android devices. Due to this visually, the operation of the device looks much "faster".

An important role is also played by the Intel GMA 3650 accelerator. It is designed to work with "heavy" graphics, so there will be no problems with playing even the most top-end games on this device.

RAM

When it comes to the operation of mobile devices, it is very important to note how much RAM (or device RAM) has. With this characteristic, you will understand how the tablet computer will react to opening several programs at the same time. Since our Acer Iconia W510 has 2GB of RAM in its specifications, you can rest assured that even running multiple applications won't hinder its performance in the slightest.

autonomy

No matter how technologically advanced a mobile device is, the issue of its autonomous operation and the level of energy consumption remains the most relevant. Indeed, in essence, this indicator determines how long the device can function without additional charging. And in the case of the Acer Iconia W510, the situation regarding its autonomy can be called very positive. The battery of the device has a capacity of 3540 mAh, which makes it possible to work continuously in reading mode for up to 10 hours on a single charge. This means that in the maximum load mode for the entire system, the tablet will last up to 5 hours. This is enough to enjoy your device on the road or somewhere far from a power outlet. At the same time, do not forget about the docking station mentioned above.

With its help, your working time doubles! After all, another battery is mounted inside this accessory, which has a similar capacity. So in general, we can say that in any mode of operation of our tablet will be enough for a full-time working day.

operating system

In order to characterize the operation of Windows 8, originally presented on this device, it is necessary that the reader has experience of interacting with this modification of the system. First of all, we should note the "Desktop" mode, which we have seen on other mobile versions of Windows-based devices. It looks like this: the user is presented with a screen with a "tile" in the Microsoft style, symbolizing the designations of various programs and applications. In some way, this is the same "Desktop" of Android devices, stylized differently. If desired, the user can leave it and go to the menu, where all applications and add-ons will be available.

The logic of the Windows system on the Acer Iconia W510 is fully preserved. To understand what is meant, you need to work with the device yourself. Some users believe that such an organization of the system is very efficient and convenient, while others, on the contrary, criticize Windows and find it uncomfortable to work with.

And, of course, let's not forget about the obvious advantages of this system, such as a package of office applications, for example. For some users, they are the determining factor in choosing a system for their tablet.

Screen

Looking at the display of the device, the bright and saturated colors of the IPS matrix immediately become noticeable. They cannot be confused with anything and, according to users, it is this richness that makes working with the tablet very convenient and understandable in any lighting conditions. Another point that shows the quality of the W510 (reviews confirm this) is the excellent visibility of the image on the monitor, even if the device is tilted. And in general, viewing angles can be a universal measure of screen quality, so in this case we could give this model a rating of "5" at the very beginning of the test.

Another confirmation of this is the high resolution and pixel accuracy. Despite the fact that the screen diagonal is only 10.1 inches, the device has a resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels. This means a high dot density and, as a result, excellent image quality.

Connection

From the point of view of communication abilities, the Acer W510 (which we are reviewing) is ambiguous. There are classic data transmission modules (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth), as well as a contactless payment and NFC battery charging module. At the same time, the tablet does not provide a slot for a SIM card (hence, there is no support for 3G/LTE connection); and there is also no GPS sensor to locate the tablet. Probably, the developers abandoned these additions due to positioning the device not as a portable portable gadget, but rather as a personal computer or laptop for work tasks.

Heating

Another interesting point that we would like to reveal in this article concerns how hot the device case becomes during its operation. After all, as you know, the more powerful the gadget, the higher the risk that it will get very hot and at the same time create additional discomfort for the user. How is the Acer W510 doing with this problem?

The characteristics indicate that the tablet is equipped with a passive cooling system, which means an increased risk of heating it during operation. In addition, an X86 architecture processor is installed here, which also makes it more prone to rising temperatures. However, there is really no need to worry about this.
